Hi. I have two questions... the first has to do with the steering shaft rubbing my equal length header on the driver side... is there a smaller shaft or something I can do other than denting my header where the steering shaft rubs... I have to take my headers off and fix where the one is bent anyways... cause I can't fix my exhaust leak... and it is because the headers aren't matting up right.... so while I'm at it I should probably deal with the steering shaft problem... other question is related to gears... I have read allot and am set on 4.10's one day... is it necessary to get the master install kit? Someone said I would need a press.. or something... is it a easy install... how long would this take me.... ??

I would say a solid steering shaft might help (if you're talking about the shaft hitting the header at the rag joint?) but that's a bit pricey. We've tried grinding some off that off and that helps a lot. What kind of shape are your motor mounts in? That's my problem right now...i never had a rubbing problem but lately my mounts are about shot and the shaft has started to rub..i can't really say on the gears as i've never installed them, but i can tell you 4.10s are fun :D

If you have never done gears and don't have someone who has experience doing them I would recommend having them done at a shop. If you do not have the correct backlash, pinion depth and so on you can end up with a set of gears that howl and whine. If your bearings are in good shape then you should be able to reuse them.

my motor mounts are brand new.. polyurethane... my dad actually mentioned wanting to throw a couple washers on the motor mount to raise it up enough that it doesn't rub... about the gears... I honestly have done everything on my own with this mustang... haven't taken it in for anything... just that kind of person I guess... aids in learning too... I would rather try to do the gear swap myself... guess I am just gonna have to do some research... what I'll do is take pictures during the process and see if I can get any tips... we finally have a garage so it doesn't have to be a rush in the driveway (oh my god) rain job.

One other thing on the steering shaft. I believe that I saw somewhere on here that you can actually loosen a couple of bolts in the interior and shift the steering column and shaft a little bit. You might want to do a search on it and see what you can find.

I am pretty much the same about working on my car as you. The only thing that someone else has done is the gears and charge my AC system.

If you do want to do it yourself get a set of FRPP gears. When I was reading up on doing the gears myself that is what was recommended to me. You will need a something to press the pinion gear off with and to press it back on. There are some pretty good write ups on gear installs on the net and some links on here if you do a search.
