Steering wheel....advice

guys, my original black steering wheel is broken in three places.
Cracked near the horn, the big fat plastic bit there, it's still in one piece but....

I am torned between getting an exact replacement model, or get an after market one, or even a Grant one.

What would you recommend to do/get?
any pictures of yours (if not the original) if appreciated.

I would get one of those grant wood replacements for the early mustangs, since they are cheap and easy to get. I would get a rimblow personally I think they look amazing, but I don't know about in a 65.

Here is mine. The alum is a bit scratched courtesy of the shop that just got done working on it. Typical Dutch. Like the time the plumber showed up at my house and dropped his box of tools on my dining room table and put a big scratch on it. Any ways, I will take a dremel and some polishing rouge and take the scratches out.

I just installed a 15" Mota-Lita MK3 steering wheel on my '66. It seems the Mota-Lita boss (F24) doesn't quite fit properly (leaves a 1/2" gap), but some have been able to move the steering column up to compensate. I tried this, but was only able to move it a 1/4" leaving a 1/4" gap. It will work for me.

I could post a pic if you like?

I'm using a Moto Lita as well. No problem closing the gap. Love it!

Don't you lose leverage and have to put more effort into turning the car with a smaller steering wheel on manual cars?

get something like the classic 3-spoke woodgrain

my $.02 - I think the original mustang interiors were almost perfect/beautiful/best of the pony/muscle cars - I responded to your console thread. I would try to get as close as you can to this look:

I like to go restomod everywhere else but I'm kind of a purist on the interior. I lust after the '69-70 3-spoke rimblow "Mach 1" steering wheel for mine . . .

I had one and put it up for sale only the shop back in the US that had it "lost" it (either on eBay or a swap meet) when I had a buyer ready to pay $300 for it.

Oh man don't remind me, that buyer was me and I still haven't found one yet. I call dibs if it ever shows up again. I too want one of those rimblow wheels so bad, it is all that is left to complete my interior besides a new dash pad.

If you get a Grant make sure you get the new horn/mounting kit the old ones are terrible.

IMO, if you stick with the black camera finish dash and glove box, i'd go with a black wheel, and a console with the black/chrome inserts.
If you plan on upgrading to the deluxe interior group (aka pony interior) then I'd go with a wood grain wheel.
No "grey area" in your car, it's all black and white!
If done as a complete package (including door handles and console) the wood grain would really look sweet.

Scott's right, the wood grain would go better with the pony interior which had woodgrain inserts right?

it is black or white in your car, so maybe the black wheel would look better . . .

i'll be using the leather wrapped 3 spoke sport wheel from a mustang II, i have one already. i also have one from a 79 cobra that doesn't have the horn provison in the wheel that is like NOS. i would have to modify the 79 cobra wheel to make it work since the horn was on the turn signal stalk in those cars, but it is black with black leather grip and i really like that look. the M II wheel has a black leather grip but silver spokes, it would look good too but i think the all black cobra wheel would look better, also the leather grip on the M II wheel isn't in as good shape as the cobra wheel.
