steering wheel play

It can be the rag joint - that is where I would look first.

Also it can be tie rods, the rack and pinion itself, etc.

Good luck.

I just noticed this on my car. I first thought it was because I was not using the stock steering shaft bolt but now I am and I have it tightened all the way. Where and how much can I find a new rag joint, cause I know its not anything else.

i had the same problem on a gmc sierra it ended up being the steering box so if you do as i did and replaced everything and problem still exists check steering box.if it comes to that i believe theres an adjustment bolt on steering box that might help, in my case it did'nt and i just replaced it.

Well mine is the rag but where do i get one of those. I had someone tell me when he got his he got a better shaft where the rag joint had needle bearings instead of a rubber bushing so it wont wear out as fast. But he said he got it at 50resto but they dont carry it anymore.

Normally people get a used shaft or they go aftermarket like others suggested.

The guys can help more with getting stuff from parts stores (I am not sure on that).

Good luck.

Mustangs don't have steering boxes, they are rack and pinion steering systems

so i see. this is the kinda thing that happens to me lately i have just converted to working on fords (mustangs) because i purchased a stang about a year ago i've worked on old school G.M.'S all my life.once i had the rack and pinion replaced in my escort but i paid to have it installed. thanks for the info. i'm studying up on it at the moment. i see ford(mustang) upgraded to rack&pinion in 1974 and the chevy (camaro)upgraded in 1993 big difference.
