steering wheel shake at 47-55 mph?

03 GT steering wheel shakes back and forth only from around 47 through 55 mph and will shake constantly if held within that speed range. Just started after I put new 18" FR500's on. Had the front end aligned...didn't do anything. It's a 5 speed and doesn't matter the gear it's in. Anybody had this problem?

When was the last time you got your wheels balanced?

Did you have this problem before your alignment?

And did you rotate your tires at the time of alignment?


If you rotated them, and one of the rear wheels was a little out of balance you won't notice it as much on the rear of the car as you will on the front end. Since when you rotated them that tire would be on the front end now, that is a possibility.

Other possibility is just your wheels are just out of balance.

Or possibly they messed something up w/ the alignment.

I always torque the lug nuts down correctly...thats not an issue...the rears are 18 x 10's and the fronts are 18 x 9's so I can't rotate them. They were just balanced before I put them on 5 days ago. I personally helped with the alignment, it's good, and I had the problem before the alignment, yes. So the only thing I'm seeing possible is the balance on the fronts is off.

Sounds like it.

My right front wheel is very slightly bent. You cant visually see it, but it is noticable when trying to balance that wheel. It vibrates a little over 55mph through about 70mph or so, but it isnt too annoying.

Thats a possibility also if you have hit any decent sized bumps at speed.

this is a good one...i took all 4 wheels in and got them rebalanced...it's worse!...why can't anyone balance my damn wheels?...I'm kinda getting tired of messing w/ this. My wheels are all brand new...they can't be bent.

where did I get the wheels?...AmericanMuscle.com they are wheel replica brand...I just got them all balanced again at pep boys....I called them they said bring em back in ...well this is really starting to piss me off

Are they bolting on all the way? What lug luts are you using?

I had a friend who put aftermarket Cobra wheels on his Mustang and had wheel wobble. What happened was the lug nuts were bottoming out on the stud before fully seating the wheel all the way. They thought they had a balance issue until one of us driving behind them notice the rear wheels slightly wobbling.

They had to use different lug nuts to get the wheel to mount up all the way.

I worked at Pep Boys for years...you might wana go someplace else to get them balanced right

never thought of that. i would definitely check the lug nuts.

Put the stock wheels and tires back on and see what the car does.

If it's fine with the stock wheels, then you know it's the wheels and tires you bought. Just because they are new, doesn't mean they are not bent. There could be a bad casting, who knows. If they have been rebalanced by different shops and different machines, then it can't be that.

Are the tires new or used??

tires are new on the front, used on the back as I bought the rear two wheels and tires off a friend, however they only had about 5,000 miles on them...general exclaim UHP's on the back and Falken ze512's on the front...I'm getting pep boys to rebalance for the second time tomorrow...this is the last time I think I'm going do it...thats got to be what it is...everything about it says they aren't balanced right...this is just a pain in the ass

If they are only balancing them on the inside lip, that could be a problem. Have them put some sticky weights on the inside lip. I had them do that with all my cars because I don't want weights on the outside lip edge, but not having them balance them on the outside is a bad thing. Sticky weights FTMFW!!

Steering Shake, partially solved

I had this start to happen on my 07 GT. Kicked in Bad around 55.

Went time after time to a ford dealer,, had the wheels balanced, new tires, everything.

Finally Ford told me there was a TSB about this and in some cases it was related to the front part of the exhaust hitting the steering column (or something along those lines).

What was annoying as hell is that some days it was horrible, felt like I had a flat. Other days (the day Id want to film it for proof or show the dealer), it was gone or barely.

Anyway, so they tighted up some of the bolts and move something around and the problem went away mostly. Now it comes back a bit, mostly when the car is cold and tends to fade away after about 20 mins of driving or if the car has been driven.

Had nothing to do with tires, the wheels, rims, balance. Stupid exhaust again.
