I can't seem to drive my car for 5min. without getting out of it smelling like I was in the garage with the door down! I've checked for leaks & as far as I can tell there aren't any. The only thing I can figure is that the weather strip on the hatch has about a 10" tear in it where I can see light pass through it, right above the liscense plate. Is it possible that the fumes could be coming in from there? Thanks...

sure or it could be pulling it in through your air box from your charcoal canaster box.

If that's the case, what can I do to fix it? ( the airbox )I'm not worried about emisions & my smog pump is soon to be removed anyway. Thanks.

Run a strip of duct tape across the rear of the hatch and drive it around, that will tell you if its coming from there. Maybe it would be better to use masking tape, less glue. Look for rust holes under the car Is the car running rich? I am not suggesting that you fix it with tape, just use it for diagnosis.

Thanks Jerry, the tape is a good idea for trouble shooting. I should have thought of that. I checked for rust holes & I'm ok there. I don't think she's running real rich but I am getting a little black smoke residue on the facia above the right side exhaust exit.

I don't mind it that much, ( I can think of worse smells, lol ) but my wife complains every time I drive her around in it. Also, I am a little concerned about carbon monoxcide.

86Q im in the same boat as you, but mine doesnt smell like carbon monoxcide, smells like gas . I have a off road hpipe so I figured thats why it smells bad. When I had my hi flow cat hpipe on i didnt smell gas at all. I think if i purchased a AFPR and some dump offs i wont be so bad anymore.

peace

Thanks thinker, mine smells like gas too. ( I don't think that carbon monoxcide actually has an odor ) I'm gona try to look into what 88stangmangt said about the charcoal canister / airbox thing. I have the ram air hood so mabey the smell is coming right out of the vents in the hood? I'll also try the tape on the hatch .

When I had my offroad H on I smelled a considerable amount of exhaust fumes. I got used to it. If you have an offroad exhaust(no cats) It's normal. Just drive an older car(pre 1975) without cats and you'll notice exhaust fumes as well. JMO I kinda miss gettin outta my car smellin nice and fresh from exhaust.

You should try and market that as a mens cologne, New "Exhaust for Men" for when you want to wear her out. I could write ads.

Mine smells a little, but not much at all. I am getting great mpg. I have gutted front cats and no rear ones, muffs and full tails. It certainly wont make your eyes water and clothes stink. GF has never mentioned it You may be running rich though. check the plugs, are they a nice tan color?

I only smell like exhaust when I've been running the car in the garage. sometimes I'll get it inside when I'm driving, but its not too bad. All I do is turn on the vent and it blows it all out through the 14" long gap in my hatch rubber and probably out the missing bottom half of my driver's door seal.

And yes, the fumes are most likely coming in uder the hatch. I have all new door and hatch rubber waiting to go on.

Have you ajusted yor TPS? Set it to 0.98v. That will get rid of some of the smell if it is in the 1.--v range.

the charcoal box is connected thru your tank and deals with exhaust (raw) fumes could be it has a cracked hoses? if so your air vent when used will suck it right in thru the firewall but my guess it is the exhaust rolling up your bumper. My manager ask's me why my 5.0 smells like gas all the time LOL.

P.S. that black stuff on your bumper is carbon and without cats that is perfectaly normal
