Im guessing I would probably beat my buddy whos got a Prelude with VTEC at the track. How close would it be? Would it be a drivers race? I'm pretty much stock, so is he, except for the vtec motor.

Seriously, the vtecs have what for specs? Like 190 HP and 158 TQ. You should beat him easily.

They can kiss high 14's stock with teh VTEC. Launching a FWD car isnt always easy though, but either way your faster unless he has a good bit of work done to it.

You have a low 14 sec car and your friend has a 15...sec car plain and simple.

My friend has a Vee-tack Prelude with an intake, clutch/flywheel, and exhaust and he ran a 14.5 ... You should beat him but you ain't gonna 'smoke' him.

Lol seriously, don't worry about a Prelude. I've raced a few, and one time after the race the guy rolled down his window (turned out to be a friend of my girlfriend who happened to be in my car at the time) and proclaimed "Hey! That's not fair... You have a Mustang!" To which I lmao.

Yeah, until I post in it

Anyways...

You could walk him off the line and then go WOT and easily smoke his azz

If he tries to get you to race from a roll, absolutely decline. There is always the possibility of him somehow getting a slight edge on you somewhere in the speed/rpm ranges. If this happens it can easily be misunderstood when the story is repeated that a Mustang "got mad tyte owned yo". Never race from a roll, that is where the misunderstandings come from... Always race from a dig.

All VTEC means is variable valve timing, and you have variable geometry intake manifold runners which are less bragged about but also very effective.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Variable Length Intake Manifold Runners from wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VLIM
Variable Length Intake Manifold (VLIM) is an automobile engine manifold technology. As the name implies, VLIM can vary the length of the intake tract in order to optimize power and torque, as well as provide better fuel efficiency.

There are two main effects of variable intake geometry:

* Swirl - Variable geometry can create a beneficial air swirl pattern in the combustion chamber. The swirls help distribute the fuel and form a homogeneous air-fuel mixture which ignites without engine knocking. At low rpm, the speed of the airflow is increased by directing the air through a longer path with limited capacity, but the shorter and more capable path opens when the load increases so that the greater amount of air can enter the chamber. In DOHC designs, the air paths are often connected to a separate intake valves so the shorter path can be excluded by inactivating the intake valve itself.
* Pressurization - A tuned intake path can have a light pressurizing effect similar to a low-pressure supercharger due to Helmholtz resonance. However, this effect occurs only over a narrow engine speed band. A variable intake can create two or more pressurized hot spots, increasing engine output.

Many automobile manufacturers use similar technology with different names. Another common term for this technology is Variable Resonance Induction System (VRIS).

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

VTEC overview from wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VTEC
VTEC (standing for Variable valve Timing and lift Electronic Control) is a system developed by Honda to improve the combustion efficiency of its internal combustion engines throughout the RPM range. This was the first system of its kind and eventually led to different types of variable valve timing and lift control systems that were later designed by other manufacturers (VVT-i from Toyota, VANOS from BMW, and so on). It was invented by Honda's chief engine designer Kenichi Nagahiro.

I used to own a '98 Prelude and it was a nice car. But, it doesn't compare to my GT.

What year was the prelude? Anything done to it?

They aren't slouches at a higher mph roll tho, but it's not like you should be worrying

I wouldnt worry about running from a roll too much, but that may just be me.

Seriously though, VTEC is a pretty damn cool thing. Its too bad that the general population of ricers and people who know nothing about cars give it a bad rep. Yeah, its a little weak on some of the stock engines slapped in Honda's, but if done right you can tweak the RPM's that it comes on with and make it pull pretty nice.

My brother had a nicely built LS-VTEC in his Integra, and there was a HUGE difference when the VTEC fired up at around 5500 RPM's, and it didnt stop pulling to past 8k. Sick little car as long as you kept the revvs up.

That's the damn truth!! My old prelude was a completely different car once it got past 5500rpm .. The motor sounded awesome when VTEC kicked in, but nothing like a V8

Great cars, great motors ..... as long as they're not riced out

Yeh, it is a pretty sweet car for it being a ricer and all. The only reason I made the thread is cuz we'll prob never end up getting to the track and that last time we messed around on the road he got owned by a NY state trooper

Well that should be a lesson learned.. I know i've been lucky enough to not get caught racing when I would street race, but I have gotten caught messing around.. Lesson learned the hard way

Preludes run mid 16's at my track. Stock GT's run high 14's. Can you say bum raping?

Better get some lube...

Whats your altitude up there? Newer Preludes at sealevel are definatly quicker than mid 16's if they are a 5 speed VTEC.

lol thanks for the great replys guys...I guess i would beat the vtec pretty good. However he is blowing me away with his gas milage, seems like a fun car to drive from what you guys seem to say.

I'm gunna take it easy on my mustang mods and keep it pretty much stock probably forever. My father and I do have our eyes on a new project, a factoy five racing shelby cobra replica. 2300lbs with a stock 302/5.0 donor motor puts you into the high 12's. Ive got my eye on a 351 windsor crate motor build that puts out 425 at the flywheel should be a blast. The deal is that I'll be dropping the money for the drivetrain and he'll foot the bill for the kit, which puts us about even... but right now im still just dreamin...
