Strange Noise from the rear while stopping

I have done a quick search on google and searched the forums for something similar to what I am experience, but not finding anything. Here is the problem. I don't want to say that I am hearing grinding, but there is some sort of grinding sound coming from the rear of my car only when I apply the breaks during the first 1-2 stops. The "grinding" sound is loud and sounds more like something that is rotating is hitting something that is stationary????? It sort of reminds me of the sound those wheels make in a casino which have those flappers....louder of course. I also feel it a bit in the shifter. It is a manual transmission. Here are my thoughts so far. Don't think it is a U-joint issue, becuase it only happens while breaking. Don't think it is a drive shaft issue, because it only happens while breaking.

Any ideas?

brake drums and rotors develop rust over a short period of time and will cause a grinding sound for the first few stops every DAY! this is normal. If you are hearing more than a light grind sound you need to jack up the car and put it on stands etc... wiggle the drive shaft, look at U-joints, pull wheels and check for brake wear (mine actually wore all the way out in the rear on one car and another car the shoe actually came separated from the backing and stuck to the drum) - sounds like something simple - good luck

Thanks for the response bsedwebt70-5.0. From what you have said...I don't think it is rust on the break drums. I hear more then a light grinding and I can feel in the car and shifter. I will jack it up today to take a look at the drive shaft and drum brakes. Would worn breaks act like this?

YES!!! worn out brakes will make a bad grinding sound - try just using the parking brake to see how it sounds - that is what I did - frt brakes can be seen through the wheels - look for fresh cuts in rotors on the outside and inside or just pull the wheels and look at the thickness of the pads - it is easy to tell....

That was my first thought too - while driving on (on a safe course, etc) lightly apply the E-brake and see if the noise occurs.

I've had a shoe get ****-eyed and wear out one corner of the lining. The shoe then got cocked and would grind. Check for stuff like that.

simply remove the wheel and drum and look i have had springs break and adjusters fall out of place and make the same sounds as you described...keep us posted...

Ok..I pulled the tires and drums off....to look at the pad etc...They all appeared ok, but I have uploaded some pictures just incase you guys may see something I don't. I also yanked around on the ujoint...and axle and nothing moved. Not sure what it is now. One thing I did notice is that there was some wear on the fender, but don't know why it would only occur when stopping....I have reposted with a picture of the adjuster....I have only posted the right side since the left didn't turn out. If needed I will post it later

i don't see the adjuster on the left rear brake.... take a few more pics but let us see the bottom of the brake pad area where the adjuster is located.......left and right...

added another pick to the above post...only 1 turned out...the adjuster for the right....let me know what you think.

the adjuster on the left is identical to the right... right?....if so it looks fine to me i would sand the inside of the drums where the pads make contact with some sand paper reinstall drum and set adjusters so you feel a slight drag while turning drum ...

Well I think I figured out what the noise was. Right where the drive shafts leaves the rear axle.....it was hitting the muffler. I only found this when I had the right rear tire on the ground and the left rear still on the jack stand...thus putting the frame in torsion. The exhaust system is in need of replacement...and I believe it must be a bit out of alignment. Does this sound like a probabe reason for the noise I am hearing when coming to a stop. I am not sure why it doesn't occur while accelerating. Anyway...thanks for the help guys.

could be when you are braking the weight transfer causes the two to contact each other and the axle will shift a slight bit when speeding up or slowing down - could be enough to cause it. I would take a metal strap and wrap it around the exhaust pipe and route it to a bolt somewhere under the car to pull it away about a half inch or so and the see what happens - mine was knocking up against the floor on the left side until I took the rear most hanger and pulled it to the side and put a small hose clamp on the actual hanger between the rubber isolator and the "j" area to move it over 1/2 inch - problem solved.

I have the same sounds

I have the same problem in my rear end only when i come to a complete stop it sounds as if something is still moving in the rear i just had my rear end changed because i had a 1985 rear end changed it caused it was differ from the 88 so now i still have the same problem mech says it could be the driveline hitting something or the transmission brand new tranny from advance auto and i have to try to get a nother this one is not doing right am told it shifts roughly and in od it makes a sounds under the hood seem to be coming from the tranny clutches does anyone know what could have happened
