i have an 86 mustang with a 79 windsor and a t-5... i was under the impression that the clutch the guy gave me when i baught the car was stock.. but i guess i was wrong... i put a new cable in off a 90 gt .. and first burnout i was stuck in 3rd gear... i shut the car off and i could then pull(with some force) it into nutral.... what gives... this is a brandy new clutch cable... its hot rod weekend here in york pa and i want to get my baby out for some action... any sugestions as to why a new cable streched so bad..? what else should i be looking for.. everything is stock as far as the self adjuster, clutch fork.

help
thanks guys

oem ford cable or aftermarket? also after just one burnout? i would look to see how much slack in the pedal with it being a slock setup as far as adjusting. im not sure though if the cables are different lengths from the years....someone else will chime in there

its probably and adjustable cable which is why its such a POS. Get under the car and look at the clutch fork to see what kind of attachment the cable has. If has some threads and some bolts on the end its adjustable and its prob either adjusted incorrectly (too loose) or its been tightened to all hell and the cable is stretching. I would guess the latter. Get yourself a nice OEM NON adjustable piece. Maximum Motorsports sells one for 69.99

I had a similar issue. Aftermarket adjustable FTMFL!!! I just replaced it with the Ford OEM cable and a firewall adjuster. Much happier now. I had a BBK adjustable and it was le junk.

a loose clutch cable will cause you to be super stiff going into gear with the car RUNNING, and grab right off the floor when accelerating.

a loose cable will NOT effect the trans with the motor off. If you're having to pry it out of third with the motor off, you have tranny issues.

read the link in my sig, it gives involved detail on clutches and adjustments. Rule that out, then start to look at the trans..

a 79 motor in an 86?? Damn, I hope it's built.

best of luck
