Streetable 289 Stroker

I have a 67 GTA with a 289/C4.

I am trying to budget ahead, and do my research before I start buying parts... but I would like to build a 331 or 347 Stroker motor using the 289, but beyond that I haven't been able to find direction as far as what heads are best, intake/carb combo and rearend gears (3:50). I'm also planning to beef up the trans at the same time, reasonable stall converter and shift kit. I want the car to have power but also be driven to work (once in awhile - not daily) in the summer months, around to area shows, etc.

I've read various reports on the 331 vs 347, mostly saying that older 347 kits were not daily drivers because of oil problems..but recent advances in piston designs have corrected that problem (don't know if that is true or not).

So I guess I'm basically looking for suggestions from those who've been down this road. What some good part combinations have been, vendors, etc. Keep in mind that I am working on a modest budget (I have a family to feed), so the sky is not the limit. An affordable but respectable build is my goal.

seems like everybody is using afr's or trick flow for heads these days. The intake/carb/cam will be determined by how much power you want, where in the rpm range you want it, and how streetable you need the car to be.

I have the same goals with the same ingredients as you. I would like to keep the 289 and build it.

I think if you could disclose a total budget amount that would give alot of the guys in here a target to shoot for. Things like local labor shops, crate engine options, stroker kit costs, etc... are all to be considered.

Myself, I'm planning on spending five grand, turn key.

For our smaller cube aspirations it seems the AFR heads are the chit. Around $1400 new/complete.

I'm figuring a grand for a good reputable stroker kit.

I'm also planning on buying all new components. Carb, manifold, cam kit, oil pan kit, elec's., etc.... probably another $1500.

I'm going to budget a grand to have a guy meticulously put it together and make it run correctly.

As far as part choices.... AFR (165 or 185) as mentioned. Edlebrock Air Gap manifold are the only firm decisions at the moment. I'm about an honest three years from coming up with the funds. I've got other goodies to buy first.

Perfect start... thanks. I'm trying to keep my budget down below $4-$5k...but like BAD67FUN said, if I have to push out the project in order to save more coin, I can. The car is running fine, although slow and tired, it can satisfy my cravings to cruise until I get the cash together.

Do newer stroker kits out now correct the oil ring problem, or is this still a factor with the 347 kits?

Depends upon the piston and rod manufacturer, and what compression ratio you are going to go with.
