Strut tower patches

In the coming weeks I’m going to be welding in some patches on the lower strut tower areas where all these cars rust. What’s the preferred gauge sheet metal to use? Would 16 be too thin?

The strut tower is 16 guage from the factory. Frame rail is 14.
