Stuck PCV Screen...Any Ideas?

I'm finally replacing my PCV Valve/screen on my stock 90 LX 5.0...probably the first time it's ever been done. I can't get the screen out of the lower intake, however. I've tried to pierce it w/ a screwdriver, tried to use a piece of wire, i've tried a telescoping magnent, i've used needle-nose pliars, this thing is stuck. I sprayed some WD-40 in there about 20 min ago, but I didn't have enough in the can to soak it....now I have a stuck PCV screen that's been beaten to death and torn at. I do not want to pull the upper intake to get this thing out! Any other ideas?

What I did...was get a pick I had laying around the house (it looks like the ones the dentist clean your teeth out with...real sharp at the end...it has a 90 degree bend at the end...and I put the sharp point under one of the "wires" in the screen and it pulled right out...

thanks...yeah, I think I need something like that w/ a little hook at the end. I just tried using a turkey themometer to jam into it, but I couldn't get it out w/ that either. I probably really need to soak it w/ wd-40 and then try because it wouldn't even budge w/ those needle-nose pliars...I just pulled little pieces of the screen out

theres a tool out there cant remember the name but I will try to describe it.
Its has a braided look to it and its very flexible a push down tab, when u push the tab there are 3 little prongs that come out at the bottom of the tool. i'm sure the local parts store like pep boys/auto zone will carry the tool. anyone know the name of the tool i'm talking about

Get a drywall screw and screw it into the mesh, then pull. Might do a couple and try to wiggle it loose.

yeah, its the 'long grabber tool that we use when we drop a nut where we cant reach it' tool. LOL.
TU, do you have a pair of long needle nose. i have some that are a little over a foot long. with those, i can get enough leverage to yank teeth out.

any crochet hooks around the house? (from your better half - not you).

have you tried to turn it in its bore before pulling up (like we do with radiator hoses to get them broken loose)?

I just had the same issue. Get those needlenose hooked on a piece of the wire good and do some gentle back and forth twisting and rocking. It'll break loose and then lift right out. Coming from the driver side, get your left hand on the end of the handle of the pliers and put your right hand around the side of the block and around back (under the hoses) to hold the gripping part of the pliers down by the screen. That'll give you better leverage for twisting and lifting.

I just went out and found where the PCV valve is. Im going to replace it with one from the Turbocoupe cars and get a buick check valve. But I was feeling around back there, and the rubber hose and all that was covered in oil. Does this mean it was stopped up or is it working properly?

I used needle nose pliers. There is plastic ring that holds the PCV in that may be in your way of pulling it out. It should just pull right out (both pieces)

Underneath the screen is a mass of wire that serves as a filter, I guess. If you jam the pliers into it you will have more "meat" to grab at. You could also use a dry wall screw as mentioned, but go and get a 4 inch or longer one so you can pull it out easier. Man, the thing must be pretty gunked up lol, I get the feeling your car will run better after you get it changed.

JR, i dont think we have that plastic deal - just a valve, grommet and screen. interesting though.

TU, did you get it?

Count me as another vote for the drywall screw method. When I changed mine it was really stuck in there, I tried the needlenoose pliers method as well as a few others that were mentioned with no success. Two tries with a screw and the sucker was out.

If the screen is already FUBAR and you can't get it a drywall screw you can try a moly bolt (plastic or metal). Use a long one so that you can hold onto the bolt with pliers as you tighten the screw. I'd also suggest tying a piece of string or wire to it incase it's dropped. It's a pain in the rear end but beats having to remove the intake. I was where you are with a screen so messed up that I couldn't grab it with anything. You can also try cutting up a moly bolt and try using it as a kind of grappling hook (this 'almost worked). Last resort kind of thing though... it was a pain in the butt.

Alright fellas...I got it out. I ended up using a long screw and a screwdriver, buried the screw in there and yanked real hard w/ a pair of pliars...bingo.

Here's a pic ha ha...

where do you get new screen at? i wasnt able to find my screen i guess because it is so deep in the lower intake... well any help?

Zeus, you might have to lay on top of the motor to see it. it is recessed. pull the valve and grommet to see in there.

Your PCV system was not working AT ALL. I bet a lot more guys run with this condition than know. LOTS of lower intakes I get have the screens completely blocked.

TIP - don't try and soak the screen clean as it doesn't work very well at all (been ther tried that). Just pony up the buck or two for a new one.

I know mine isnt working. Being a boosted car this is not good at all. Im buying a new one, and trying not to drive my car until I get a new one. Man, Id be afraid on what mine looks like.
