Surface rust on cylinder walls?

I have had my motor stored for some time with the heads off and now I am getting ready to put it back together. I noticed that there is some minor surface rust on the cylinder walls. Can I just clean this up with some steel wool or something without causing any harm, or is this a major problem?

No FHE with this myself, but I had a buddy who built a lot of motors. I remember seeing a couple in his garage with flash rust like you describe. I did ask him about it and he said the rings would scrape that off without causing problems with anything. His cars always ran strong, but YMMV.

A little steel wool soaked in 10W30 will do it.

Cool. Thats pretty much what I thought bout I wanted some other opinions before I slap my $2000 HCI on it. Thanx
