my 92 LX sits slightly lower in the back than in the front, would bad shocks cause this, or more likely springs?

Springs hold the weight of the car up.

Shocks only control the motion of the axle on the road.

i've heard people swear that replacing shocks set their ride height a little higher, but to me that sounds like crapola

def. ur springs bro. good excuse to pick up some eibach lowering or drag launches

Well - it depends.....

Some gas pressurized shocks actually have enough 'spring' rate in the gas pressure to noticeably alter the ride height of the car. So, installing a new set on a car that doesn't have them might restore a bit of ride height to the rear.

I suspect you just have tired springs that have sagged. The proper fix is a replacement set of springs.

ford passenger cars are notorious for sagging rear springs
