Synthetic Oil Question

I talked with an Amsoil lubrication specialist, and he said the Amsoil 0W-30 is far superior to the Amsoil 5W-20.

I'm guessing that the Amsoil 5W-20 is a diluted version of the 0W-30, although I don't know for sure.

So I use Amsoil 0W-30.

Then again, I'll never take my Mustang GT to a dealer for service or repairs, so I'm not worried about the warranty.

Currently, I have been using Amsoil 0W-30 for almost all of my 30,000 miles, and I've never had any problems.

It only amazes you because you don't have a clue as to oil properties and are basing your OPINION on what the oil companies tell you.

Have you ever ONCE had your oil analyzed?????? The guy who let it go 35k going to a lube shop was not running synthetic I'd bet, and definitely didn't get it analyzed. There's a HUGE difference between some idiot who doesn't know he's supposed to change his oil, and an enthusiast running a high performance oil.

If you change synthetic oil every 2500, more power to you...you're just wasting your time and money. I get my oil analyzed every 10k and it comes back fine.

So please, while you're welcome to your OPINION, stick to FACTS - of which you have ZERO. *GOOD* synthetics (Amsoil, Mobil1, RedLine, Royal Purple) can easily exceed 3,000 miles. I suppose my friend with 93k on his Excusrion's oil with testing done by an INDEPENDENT LAB is just a myth???? Results finally came back "oil cannot provide adequate protection and should be changed".....

You probably think that only a Ford technician can work on your car because that is what the dealer told you

years ago, Consumer Reports did an extensive article on synthetic oil. Mobil One was kept for 35,000 miles and then analyzed. No significant degradation was found. The problem is how good is your filter. 3,000 mi oil change w/synthetics and you are wasting money. BTW I use 10w-30W Mobile 1.
I change my synthetic oil around every 7500 miles.

wasting money or not, im just not gonna keep oil for 35k miles, and i still do a 3,000mi oil change with mobile 1..

Why not? I mean you can obviously do what you want, but what logic are you basing your opinion on? Do you throw your TV out every year and buy a new one? Do you change your brake pads after three months even if they're fine?

People just don't understand oil and the manufacturers have everyone brainwashed....yes oil is the life blood of your motor, but like was said - if you use a quality filter (not Fram!) and change it on a regular basis, a good oil will last.

When you're dealing with an 8qt pan (16 for my truck), the savings adds up and can be used for other things.

Hell, even MOBIL says you can go longer than 3k with their synthetic....

Good point Snkypete... Amsoil did a study where after 25,000 miles the oil breakdown was HALF of what Mobil 1 synthetic had after 5,000 miles... however they claim not to go past 30K miles, I spoke at length with one of their techs and he provided additional info as well... and 15K-20K is EASILY done with Amsoil... if you want to p-ss money away, your choice, but Amsoil's been proven on the track, in the water, and in the air... why change when it runs true???????????????? And don't believe the hype thrown at you... RESEARCH!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, there really is a difference. Between that and their two stroke oil for the jetskis, I ended up becoming a dealer to save money....it was like an awakening...

Oh - the Excursion....it was running the Amsoil bypass filter which is a completely different situation (I have one on my truck as well). It uses a primary filter that is normal which filters to around 40microns, but then there's a second filter that works down to 5microns. If you keep the oil clean, it doesn't not get contaminated and thereby does not break down.

Pete, Your wasting your breath. People believe what they want to believe, even when the facts are placed plainly in front of them. I for one feel that Amsoil is one of the best non-kept secrets on the market. People have just been snowed by the oil industry into believing that 3000 mile oil changes are necessary come hell or high water.. I laugh, and change my oil once a year..

Like I said , Mobil1 had no significant breakdown after 35,000 miles.....according to Consumer Reports.

Gentlemen, In the early 1970's I raced off road motorcycles while using Castrol bean oil. All of a sudden a synthetic 2 stroke oil came out and I stopped the smoke, didn't have to rebuild motor after 2 races and stopped fouling plugs. With Amsoil I have put 300,000 miles on an RX7 and they run hot. I run every vehicle on a 10,000 change schedule with an Amsoil filter. Easy to remember and I have never had a problem. The Series 2000 0-30 is excellent. By the way most car makers recommend 7,500 miles on conventional oil, unless it is in extreme conditions. I like my equipment to last and not fail. Racing proved it to me.

Two personal incidents
1) My 82 Reliant S/W made a funny noise on
I-95 near the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel )oil pump chain broke).
I drove for 30 miles w/no oil circulating in the engine
before the engine quit. Bottom line is the engine was
not damaged and lasted for 5 more yrs when I sold it.
2)My 90 Tbird was opened up after 150000 miles and had
no wear on the internals. The mechanic said he couldn't
believe how clean the inside was.

I believe in Mobil1.

Seems like there are some people in here who know something about oil

What about Castrol Syntec? That's what my mechanics use, and they say that it meets or exceeds the standards for all manufacturer warranties - and that it should be changed ~7500 miles or so.

What do you all think?

Also, is there any harm in changing from Castrol to another synthetic?

so what? its not even that expensive to change oil every 3-4k miles. who cares. laugh yourself into a tizzy.

It's not expensive? $7/qtx8qts and a filter? That's over $60.....

It still remains that the people who are changing their oile every 3-4k are doing so based upon a false belief and not FACTS....Sorry we're trying to help people...

Instead of replying, why not change your brake pads every month? Change your belts and hoses every week? They're not expensive either...

Rather than make a sarcastic, unhelpful comment that is obviously based upon zero knowledge of the topic, try helping someone.
