Synthetic Oil Question

What about Castrol Syntec? That's what my mechanics use, and they say that it meets or exceeds the standards for all manufacturer warranties - and that it should be changed ~7500 miles or so.

What do you all think?

Also, is there any harm in changing from Castrol to another synthetic?

Syntec is generally regarded as the lesser of the synthetics based upon how it does on stress tests and wear tests. It is still better than non-synthetic, but it's not as good as the others listed. (And I am a huge John Force fan and would support Castrol if I could).

There's no harm in changing to another brand.

Instead of replying, why not change your brake pads every month? Change your belts and hoses every week? They're not expensive either...

Rather than make a sarcastic, unhelpful comment that is obviously based upon zero knowledge of the topic, try helping someone.

false facts? its recommended by the manufacturer, most people go by what the manufacturer recommends, which is 3000mi city or 7500mi highway, not everyone has easy driving, alot of people here put their cars through alot of stress in the city and needs to have their oil changed sooner than someone like you..

I had amsoil in my truck, and i had to change it every 2000 miles, try paying $195 for an oil change every 8 weeks, not fun

If you're going to quote the manufacturer's, please, do it properly. Their recommendations are for NON SYNTHETIC oils.

I put more stress on my motor than the majority of the people here so you might want to learn about a subject before making a comment that isn't accurate.

Why did yo uhave to change your Amsoil every 2000 miles? I'd LOVE to hear this...

It's just dangerous the information people think is accurate.

my mistake, all great one. im just refering to what i remember from briefly talking to a tech a dealer a few years ago.

would you love to hear why i changed my amsoil every 2000 miles? well, pete, you see, when your moving 120,000lbs+ of steel through very tough terrain, at a very large incline, you put a very large ammount of stress on its drivetrain. so dont tell me anything about stress.

btw, tell me why i shouldnt have changed my oil every 5-6k miles after running 200k+ miles in two years on my 98? because its a waste of money? no. because its a waste of time? no. is it worth the 15 minutes? how isnt it? what is it hurting exactly?

if your here to "help" people, then why be a smartass about it? just because i was wrong doesnt mean you need to be a dick.

ok, know it all. why does it bother you that people want to change their oil religiously at 3k miles, fully knowing the costs? youre not saving anyones money. youre being an annoyance.

why is it dangerous that someone thinks changing oil at 3k miles is accurrate? who is that hurting? if they dont care about the costs, why do you?

Ahhh....the idiots always start with personal insults when they don't have any facts to make a point.

It's not hurting anyone - never said it was....try reading.

It is a waste of time and money and we are trying to help people here - you wouldn't know anything about that.

And I'm not the great one, just greater and more informed on the subject than you are.

If you have some FACTS to add to the conversation, I'm still waiting....but the only thing you've proved is your immature and lack of knowledge and ability to help another member.

snkypete, I work on my own car thank you very much. But when FORD gives me a full warranty and tells me to change my oil every 3,000miles with 5 20 I THINK IM GOING TO DO IT. You put so much stress on facts that maybe you should look at opinions more often. In MY opinion is that anyone is stupid to take a perfectly good warranty and throw it out the door just because they think they can run oil for 30k miles. Ill pay the 12 i spend a month on motorcraft oil and filter and have my insurance. Oh by the way the explorer was running synthetic and we DID send it off for oil analyzation!!!

1. It is a waste of time to change the oil if it doesn't need to be done.
2. It is a waste of money to throw something out that doesn't need to be (let alone the environmental aspect).
3. I am helping people who otherwise would be listening to your ridiculous uninformed banter about a subject you clearly know nothing about. That is how the "myth" continues...

There are plenty of facts that I'd be willing to listen to - hell, ONE would be a great start. But alas, you have to again resort to a personal attack because you don't have any FACTS.

Learn something about oil, then I'd be more than happy to have a discussion with you about it.

The question was who changes their brakes, hoses and belts every 5k miles? Get it straight..

Again - you don't have a clue what you're talking about...you think you can tell the quality of an oil by looking at it? The ONLY way to tell the properties of an oil is to have it analyzed.

HAVE YOU EVER HAD YOUR OIL ANALYZED? Don't worry, I already know the answer.

We recycle here as well, however you are still wasting oil.
