More questions...

My speedometer drive cable is worn out, its cracked in a few places an causing a leak. When I do the swap I might as well replace it, but which one do I get? What gear should I buy for it?

I have a C4 auto now, swapping to a 94 T-5 with a .68 overdrive with 2.79 rear end gears.

What clutch do I use? I can get this kit from MU, its a Ram replacement clutch. OR I can buy a Sachs replacement clutch from O'reillys, its a little cheaper.

Thanks, Ranger

I would get on fleabay and get a king cobra clutch kit...they can be had for around 150 and will give you plenty of room to grow horsepower wise. You are also going to want to change those rear end gears....5th will be seemingly worthless at a sane cruising speed....you can go to some 3.55's and get a little more takeoff power and have your cars RPM's in more of a "happy place" at cruising speeds in 5th. (just because your RPM's are lower at a certain speed does not mean you are getting better fuel mileage) You also need to get a flywheel with 28oz imbalance (if you are using an early 302 or 289). As far as the cable goes....I know on the 87-93 t5's the C4 cable will fit....the gear will be determined by what rear end ratio you go with and will also be determined by what driven gear is inside the transmission.

C4 to T5 conversion

Hi,

I'll add your, tire dia. is a factor in determining the speedo gear you choose, as well.
As an example, before I converted to a T5, (from C4) I was running 3.55 gears with 25.6" tire dia. (225X60X15). My Rs at 70 mph were approx. 3K. After the conversion, my Rs at the same speed in 5th (.63) was 1975, or so. BTW, I needed a 19 tooth speedo gear to get within 1.5 corrected mph.
Good Luck!

I'll go ahead and get a speedo cable for a c4 and figure out what gear I need later. As for rear end gears, they are staying because I'm not entirely sure I have 2.79s, I'll find out for sure when I do the swap. Thanks for the king cobra clutch suggestion, I looked on eBay and found this

Hi,
FYI:
Make sure you order the correct diameter.
Good luck with your project!

I do agree that 2.79's are a bit tall, but my '88 GT has them with a T5 and it's not that bad once you get used to it.
