T-5 owners, what did you do about your speedo?

I bought a speedo cable off of Ron Morris Performance under the impression that it would work to make a connection from my T-5 to my stock speedometer. This is a quote from their website. "This Cable Makes The Connection Between Your Early Speedometer And
The Late Model Speed Sensor In Transmission"

Well, I don't see any hole in the vehicle speed sensor in the tranny were I can insert this cable. I'm kinda confused and there are no instructions for the speedo cable or anything like that. I know when I took the engine out of the '94 GT it only had the WIRE for the VSS connection. What do I do? Am I missing something?

You need an 89-93 style VSS, the 94+ are set up for electronic speedos

Not to mention a stock 65-66 C4 speedo cable fits just fine in the t5 tranny minus the vss. I don't know how much the cable cost you from Ron Morris, but the local speedo shop here quoted me 35 bucks to make a custom one(stock speedo to VSS), for pickup the next day.

Word of advice to others wanting to do EFI swap, do NOT use a '94-95 engine. Too much trouble! LOL

So what about using a electric speedo? Is it easy to wire up the speedo to the speed sensor in the trans?

Booksix, I think it would be easier and cheaper just to get a new VSS. Besides, I already have the speedo cable.

I'm sorry...VSS? And, this setup would work with a Autometer elec speedo (or similar)?

VSS = Vehicle Speed Sensor. I have no idea if they would work for an electronic Autometer speedo, but I would guess that with the right connections they would.
I want to use the stock mechanical speedo, so I will buy the VSS that has the cable insert into it.

Hmm, maybe I should do the same and just use a mechanical aftermarket speedo when I upgrade. So where do you get the proper VSS from?

I just bought a VSS from Autozone for a 1993 Mustang GT for about $25. They do not come with a speedo gear in them, so if you don't already have one you will have to get one.

The Autometer gauges work with the Ford VSS. The electronic speedo it the best!!

Ok, cool. Thats exactly what I came to this thread to find out!! LOL

So I'm gonna be using a complete 89 5.0/t5 combo. Is it pretty easy to tie the elec speedo into the VSS and get it working right?

Also, the autometer gauges don't have an adjustment for gearing, do they?

If i go the mechanical route wouldn't I have to put the internal speedo gear on the output shaft of the trans? Looking in the whole now it only has a metal reluctor (I'm guessing at the part name ).

Both the electronic and mechanical VSS have speedo gears, tweet66.

The only T5 housing I know of that should have a non speedo gear on a VSS sensor is the late model V6 ones. You should be able to see a yellow speedo drive gear in the hole on the tailshaft or a black one on the 4 cyl. models. Any VSS will work as long as it is for the OBD I computers. The Autometer guages electronic speedo compesate for different gearing, tires and sppedo drive gears. Just push a button and drive a know 2 mile stretch and your done.

Glen's 1965 5.0, my stock T-5 behind my 5.0 had a black speedo gear in it. Not yellow.

now I'm worried

Ok guys that's got me wondering . Both trannys I have do not have a speedo gear, only a reluctor (looks like the reluctor in a Duraspark dist.). They were sold to me as V8 model take out trannys but no tags were on either. Guess I got screwed Can I still use thes behind a @275hp V8? I know they use the V8 style bolt pattern on the bell. I don't intend to race the car but I might hammer on it ever so often

Are you able to post a pic of the tail shaft, reluctor and input shaft?

Speed_Demon1965: These gears are interchangeable and can be swapped when one goes bad. It does not matter when using an electronic speedo but may be tougher to get the speed correct with traditional speedo gears. I don't recall, and my literature doesn't state if the black speedo gear is specific to the 94-95 V8 T5's. Ford does goofy things sometimes. The yellow gear is seven tooth and the black is a 6 I believe.
