T-5 Swap Help

I can only answer one of your questions as I don't know the answer to the other......

Yes,there is a difference in the crossmembers going from an Auto to a T-5.One car I had,the previous owner didn't change over the crossmember as he had swapped trannies (AOD to T-5).It was riding allright on the AOD crossmember. But it had a slight lean. The mount was also a bit worn being oil soaked as it was.I would highly suggest you obtain the correct crossmember for proper support.

Just a thought, about those "humps" you mention in the crossmember. As I recall,it would seem like it'd only fit properly in one direction otherwise...would the mount in the center not fit in place properly..I'm not sure though. It was just a thought so flame me if i'm wrong here.

I hadn't heard that, can anyone else chime in on this subject. I had only heard of the early fox tranny cross members. They only had one hump and had to be swapped to run dual exhaust. Anyone else have input on this? I'm curious as I didn't change mine when I swapped to a T5....

Thw Ford Racing catalog has two different crossmembers, but they are for the width of the mounting brackets (where it bolts up to the body), and states that it is for "most" transmissions. I never heard of a difference between auto and manual crossmembers, I know they take the same trans mount. As far as installing either way, it will only go in one way as the trans mount will be way off of center, and the tall hump is on the passenger side.

me too....I did a aod to t-5 swap and used my original aod crossmember. bolted up fine. NO PROBLEMS!! you'll be fine. you should be considered about gettin the pedels in there. ITS A pain in the A%S

The crossmembers are different -- the AOD has the centersection sitting farther back than the T5. The holes for the mount are slotted, so you may or may not fit your AOD one back in. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't -- they're not all the same.

When trying to install a BBK O/R H pipe the hangers would only go in about 1/2 inch into the hole on the bracket thats on the crossmember. It is as if the crossmember needs moving farther backward about two inches. But then the tranny would fall off, The other crossmember that I tried came from an 86 gt 5-speed but the humps wouldnt allow the h pipe to hug the floor close enough.

The exhuast hanger brackets are slightly different as well. Most people seem to do ok with them, but they are different. I picked up a 5-speed hanger bracket just to have them for when I do mine. :nice:
