ok so i am on my way to work this morning car was fine the whole ride cruising in 5th at about 65 70 . i get off the exit on the high way slow down in neautral go to go into first and it feels real hard. so i get it into first and i stop again and i feel the shift has no side to side motion . so i muscle it around back and fourth real hard and it frees up. i get to work and im running through the gears in the parking lot and it binds again.

i removed the boot to see if maybe something was loose or debris were jamming up the shifter. nothing . any ideas ??

Does that Hurst shifter have the positive stops that are adjustable on it?

I would check that the stops haven't backed themselves out somehow just because it's a simple thing to check, also check to make sure the 4 bolts holding the shifter onto the trans are snug.

Sounds like a bent or binding fork. Or the shaft the fork rides on.

lars it feels like it catches real low to the floor like its supposed to, but then again its my first time with a 5 speed fox. it only behaves like this in 5th, every other gear is fine except sometimes reverse if i go to put it in reverse ill go from first down to reverse and normally it goes right in but sometimes it wont and if i let my foot of the clutch a little hair is goes right in.

Hmm. Well it is supposed to have some pre-load to it. I found this out the hard way on my latest project. I check it by laying down next to the car and reaching under it to wiggle the clutch cable. Kinda hard to explain, but the cable should have a little bit of tension on it while at rest.

will do tonite or tomorrow. that may explain why when it wont go into reverse the little hair that i move the pedal is making up for the tension and allowing me to go into reverse
