question, when sitting in place with the clutch out and gears in neutral, push the clutch in and right when i move the stick into the slot for 1st i get a thunk that you can feel. now if i leave the clutch in and move the stick around it wont do it again, but once i let the clutch out and start over sometimes i get the clunk again. tranny guys, is this the throwout bearing? normal? abnormal? no cause for concern?

hey, i have that same problem too. i think mine is the clutch, because it is starting to slip when i have it opened up. but try and adjust your quadrant under the dash, see if that does anything for you.

My trannies always done this. Mine does it alot in any gear. Ill have clutch in and put it in 1st, or 2nd most of the time, and the whole car loads up (best way to describe it). You feel the clunking in the tranny, and others have noticed it from the passenger seat! I havent adressed it yet and havent had any issues from it other than that!

yeah, another guy at work said he's had his for years and has always done it. told me it was normal for the t5. i just never heard anyone talk about it and was looking for an explanation. if it happens often though, i can feel a little better.

Sounds like a worn out clutch to me.I've had my stang for over 12yrs now and its seen several
T-5s.I've never had one make that kind of noise unless it was broke or the clutch needed adjusting or was just wore out

its wierd though, no slipping, the clutch grabs low and strong, never had any issues with shifting or grinding. who knows.

I have had 3 clutches in it, all have done it!

Are u using the stock cable or an adjustable one? If u are using the stock cable it could stretched and not fully disengaging the clutch when u mash the pedal.If u have an adjustable cable where do u have it adjusted.Right off the floor or at the top?

When in neutral and the clutch pedal out, the input shaft and counter shaft are spinning, and you have a misalignment of the syncro's, so when you disengage the clutch and move into first, things have to line up, that is why you hear the clunk

I could be WAY! off but I am having a similar issue. More of a thumping then a metal clunk though. I did a little investigating and noticed that I could move the tranny by pushing on the u-joint of the drive shaft. My rubber motor mount appears to be falling apart, so I'm guessing its the mount. I have also looked at my motor mounts and they appear to be ready to replace also. What I think, guess/opinion is that my motor mounts went bad and some movement made its way back to the tranny and assisted the tranny mount in failing. Like I said I could be way off, but that is the direction I am heading. Stop me if I am wrong

My cable is aftermarket, but I really dislike it. I like to have it adjusted really high, but the way it grabs it takes up so much of the throw it basically grabs about half way.

As far as the synchros not lined up, I knew that, but whats weird is I will be rolling with the clutch in, and move it from 1st to 2nd to 1st to 2nd, and everytime I do this the car seems to load up, and you feel a clunking. Its not so much a metal on metal sound, as it is a feeling.

I do think Im going to a stock clutch cable, as every car I have driven with one has had the clutch adjusted perfect, and mine could never be adjusted that way!

perfect, that makes sense to me and even though i am not familiar with the inner workings of the tranny, i do know motorcycle trannies and they often thunk when shifted into first. so far that is the most logical explanation i have heard. this would make the sound normal correct? or are the syncros worn so the transition itsn't smooth? like i said, otherwise it works perfect. thanks
