tablet PC in our cars?

I'm not sure about you guys, but this sounds very appealing to me. I'm looking at buying a laptop for what's remaining of university and I'd like the idea of a tablet...mostly for the ability for it to mount (possibly) in the GT to use with the tweecer.

here's a picture for reference

mounting a regular laptop in our cabin seems like a nightmare, but due to the design of the tablets, they look much more managable. The touch screen is another big bonus...best place I could think of mounting is on the right side of the center column that has the DIN slots and A/C controls...if you take the plastic part off, there's a metal beam that looks like it would be sturdy enough to accept some mounting points for the frame that would hold the unit

mount it over the disconnected pass side airbag.....how big are those though? they look quite large.

you could do a 7" touch screen in dash with a mini computer stashed somewhere

wow then you could watch your NOS and VTeK internals like on F&TF. LOL JK thats pretty sweet. Would be a badass install but I bet them little suckers cost a good bit

i think they both custom made them


doing a car PC shouldnt cost all that much

7" touch screen is 150-200

you can build a pretty good PC for ~250

yeah, they custom-make them by molding in the monitor face plate w/ bondo and what not, then they paint them w/ flat black.

you should really check that site out (mp3car.com), lots of nice work.

ya i have two extra 2001+ double din dash bezels and if i ever get some spare$$ im going to build one

GPS/internet/mp3's/movies/dvd's anything a normal computer can do

the 7" is nice, but I'd like to have the vents and a DIN slot still...plus the main purpose of the computer is for school...

I think the tablet in the picture I posted is 14". the IBM X41s are 12" and that seems about a good size...I'll see if I can photochop something to give the exact idea of what I'd like to do

Yeah, Ive thought about doing that, it wouldnt be hard, Ive got a car amp running off my computer in my house right now, would be simple to use that as a new cdplayer/mp3 player plus could hold 1,000's upon 1,000s of songs and playlists, etc.


edit: just noticed the relocated ac controls, badass

Not all the cars had clock pods from the factory.

You should mount the tablet so it flips down from the roof

or mount it on a swivel that comes out from right above the vents

kinda like

but not as bulky of a mount

I have a tablet you can have - I used it years ago. It has a 'touch screen' and writing implement that I can give you too.

I think it might cost a bit to mail though - a stone tablet, hammer and chisel weigh a lot.

This is some cool lookin stuff you guys are posting. It's not for the fiscally challenged however.

Has anyone seen any surface mount female USB plugs for sale?

I'd love to be able to cleanly mount one in my ashtray so that I can tie into the twEECer and wideband without opening my glovebox.

Not sure if I would ever be hardcore enough to put a PC in my car, as if I don't have enough stuff to fix already.

Let's face it, once you have your tune straight, there's no sense in plugging up your laptop to the twEECer perpetually unless you just want to look like you were an extra in "the fast and the furious".

I would kill for a way to cable an iPod to my Mach 460 though w/out the tape.
