I'm thinking of switching both the 96 GT and the 86 Capri to Royal Purple. The 96 currently runs 10w 30 Castrol Synthetic and the Capri runs 10w40 natural. The GT has 117k on the ticker and the Capri as probably 15k on the motor.

Will it hurt anything if I switch them both to Royal Purple Synthetic motor oil and keep the weights the same? My DD is the 96.

Also, where is the best place to buy it? Local Autobone or Prep Boys?

I have never used it myself cus I usually cant afford it, but it is supposed to be the best. Late Model Resto sells a oil change kit for $50 w/ filter. My buddy with a 91 300Z Turbo and some mods was putting down 345 rwhp and did a deal at 1320 performance in Maui where for $70 they would dyno the car then change the oil with Royal Purple then dyno again and his car put down 354. A +9 hp increase seems good to me for $50 worth of oil, and yes he does change his oil every 2000 miles with regular oil. So I dont know if it was the synthetic that offered the increase or the Purple:shrug:

If it were me, I would use synthetic in the Capri with 15k on the motor. I would NOT use a Synthetic on a car with over 90k miles on it. Royal Purple makes an excellent oil.

I run RP oil, Diff and trans fluid in my 03 Mach 1.

While I didn't notice a big increase in power my milage did go up on the highway. From around 25-26 to 28-29 mpg.

I still run regular dino in my 88 and 93 cause I am cheap. When I swap the motor out in the 88 I will go RP in it.

Look my Stang Brother, nobody is trying to pass along "hype". If you have not had and oil leaks using synthetics in 100K plus motor then great. Keep using it.

The first time I decided to use synthetics was back in the early 80's and I have used them in many cars since then. In high mile cars (100K or more) I have had leaks using synthetics more often then not. Every car is different and my advice was geared towards saving a fellow Stanger a few buck on his hi-milage car. My personal experience is not "hype" its just what it is.. My personal experience.

I switched over to RP engine oil, trans and gear lub, and I also added Crane Firball CD ignition system all at the same time. While there was a very noticeable SOTP difference and about 4-5 mpg better, not sure if it was the RP, or ignition system, prolly a combination of the two.

Really, it depends on what way you look at it. To play the devils advocate, if it wasn't leaking before…and it does after…then synthetic can in fact cause leaks.

Seriously though, I just don't get the need to spend the money on high dollar oil. Most people don't even keep the synthetic's in their system long enough to realize the benefits anyways.

In the end I guess, people just spend extra money for that "feeling" that they are protecting their engines extra…extra…extra well.
