Taurus Electric Fan keeps shutting off.

I recently have a Spal "16 electric fan installed on my car until a few days ago when a foreign object flew between the fan guard and ripped all of the blades off the fan.

For a temperary fix, I went to the junkyard and pulled an electric fan from a taurus 3.0 v6 engine. After installing the fan, it will only run for a few minutes before shutting off. What's the deal? My previous Spal "16 fan would run constantly until I shut it off with the toggle switch.

I used the factory harness plug from the ford taurus and just spliced the wire on the plug and connected them directly to the wires that run to my toggle switch.

What gives? Why does the fan only run for a few minutes before shutting off? Please help.

The taurus fan likely pulls twice the amperage your old fan did. I assume you're running a relay cuz I don't know of any switches that would handle 30-40 amps constant. Chances are your relay isn't up to the task.

The Taurus fans do suck up alot of amps, (35 amps +) and I bet your relay cant handle it... check your relay, I bet that sucker is burning up hot

I just made a switch box for inside the car and hooked the fan up to it, i had four 30amp switches for various things, it worked great. You can get the frikin 30 amp switches at radio shack or autozone.

BTW, that taurus fan will probably outflow most aftermarket fans, the OEM fans are very very good.

I have a 50 amp toggle switch. Do I need to go bigger?

Also I just check my wiring, it seems as thought when I turn the fan on, after 30-45 seconds the ground wire gets so hot that I can barely touch it. What does this mean? Do I need to go with a bigger wire?

Also I notice that the ground (black) wire runs from my toggle switch to a fusable link on the positive side of the soleniod.

And the ground (black) wire that actually connects to the motor runs to the frame and is ground there also. Both black wire get really hot when I turn the fan on.

Wait, are you shorting 12 volts through your switch to ground? Does your switch control the ground side of the fan motor?

I would use a 75 amp relay, mounted near the fan. Use your toggle switch to control the relay, not the fan.

He's asking if you're pulling ALL the ground load through a little switch. If so, that's your problem. The switch inside the car should be a low amp (doesn't need to be huge, get power from the fuse box. 5-10-15 amps is plenty). Basically, all the switch should be for is to tell the relay to turn on, and the RELAY carries the load. Not the switch.

Like JT (Hissin) said... Go overkill. Get like a 75 amp relay. Better safe then sorry. You can go to radio shack and get one. The auto parts stores usually only carry 30-35 amp relays. Good luck

Sorry, I should have quoted the part you confused me about. You mentioned ground wire and positive side of the solenoid in one sentence.

Yeah,

That's exactly how it's wire. It was done that way by the previous owner.

I dont understand what is going on, but if the black wire truly is a ground, and it runs through a switch, and then connects to the postive side of the starter solenoid......When you turn the switch on, you are connecting the battery to ground.

I dont think this is the case, or you would KNOW it by now.

Someone may have chosen to use black wire, but it is not necessarily a ground wire.
