The Long and Short of it?

I have a (dumb) question that I really want the answer to. What is the difference between a 302 long block and a 302 short block. Is it the obvious, one is just longer than the other? What makes up the major differences? And, if you were to replace a 289 with a 302 in a 65 Fastback, which would you need/have to use?

Inquiring mind wants to know.
