I would love to know how much he would charge to do this type of project. Maybe someone could give him a call and ask? "all you have to do is graft the two cars together. How hard could it be?"

Maybe he would cut you a deal AND get it done in three weeks.

Hi All,

I have the rear package tray fabed up. I used 1x2 clear pine for the structure. All the joints are half lap joints for strength. The structure is sheeted with Masonite. If you are wondering what we are going to do with the rear shock towers, we are going to have them covered with a leather "boot" similar to what you would see over a shifter. As you can see, we have located the 4x110 + 300 watt amp just above the batteries. If we wanted to, we could make a hole in the package tray and expose the illuminated "Hifonics" name, but as of today, we are thinking no. The package tray is going to be upholstered in the same leather we used for the dash. This should give it a more luxurious appearance (as opposed to the typical carpet).

Wayne has finished up the front valance and it is looking killer. If things go as planned, we should have the car in living color ready to start the final assembly by the end of next week.

Well, back to work. Today, I have to fab up the subwoofer enclosure.

Another idea for the shock towers. Get a couple of old headlight housings off a 30's-40's car, you can also get repros in fiberglass. Trim them to fit the interior panels, they don't need to be in perfect shape, then cover them with 1/8" foam and leather, or if they are really nice, paint them to match the interior.

I'm guessing that front part of the package tray is removable or flips up for access to the amp and batts?

Are you putting the sub in the spare tire well and porting it to the interior? Are you going to be running "Run Flats"?

This is a really good solution. When you said leather boot I kind of shuddered a bit, because if the watermellon rolling out of the grocery bag and splitting open on the leather clad steel stud doesn't bring tears to your eyes, then whacking your kneecap on it when you are crawling back there cleaning up surely will! You could even make a pair of covers out of one of those stainless mixing bowls, they come in all sizes.

Krash is right - I know I'm in no position to pass comment (but that hasn't stopped me before...) but that gear lever gaiter idea would surely spoil the car. If you don't want to go the headlamp bowl route, get the guy who did your aluminium dash peices to knock something up...

By the way Krash, I like your sig, that guy is a nut!

I just found this thread and have spent the last hour and a half looking at all 38 pages and I have to say this project is one of the coolest things I have ever seen. Its one thing to come up with something like this, we have all had ideas about crazy projects we would like to do. But to to have the balls to attempt it, and the skills to actually do it, and do it so well that it looks like it came out of the factory that way .....amazing.

bob, i dont know exactly what your idea for the leather wrapped shock towers is going to look like, but i think this a good start of how to go about it. what exactly were you going to wrap? i think a contoured cover like the headlight buckets would look like a clean install.

Hey dude my wifes Honda CRV has these little plastic covers over the shocks in the back, they also have a similar texture as the fiberglass in your fastback.
I bet you could get some easily at the wreakers.

are you going to add any ventilation for the amps? under all that masonite, near the batteries and all there won't be too much fresh air for them to stay cool. If it's a concern of yours you can add in a fan or two to help get some air flow to them.

This weekend Wayne and I had to run up to the cabin and shut it down for the winter. We looked at the whether forecast and felt that we could not wait any longer. Here are a few views of the lake from the pier.

We only spent two days up there and wished we could have spent more. The weather was beautiful, albeit a bit on the chilly side.

Even though we were out of town, some work was still completed in our absence. Our nephew Mike wired up the power amp and got the head unit fit up. He is wiring up the rest of the system today (power, ground, illumination, remote amp, etc...).

I on the other hand got the subwoofer enclosure well under way. I just need to complete the interior baffling and we can urethane the structure right to the wheel well. Right now, the top of the sub enclosure is flush with the trunk floor. This is nice because now, when we install the carpet, it will lay flat.

Wayne is catching up on some customer cars right now, but as soon as he is all caught up, he will start checking all the panels making sure that they are ready for paint. If all looks good, he should have everything in color by the end of next week.

Wo Hoo!!! Mike got the system all wired up and functioning. Even though he just had the speakers sitting on the ground, I can tell that the stereo is going to be a killer. It is going to really crank inside the car, but unfortunately, the guys in the shop tell me I that you will be able to hear this car coming from a block or two away.

Wayne says that the car is ready to paint. We just need to disassemble (again) and prep all the pieces. After we have the chassis stripped, he just has to schedule some booth time and a painter.

Things are looking good.

Hi 85,

Yes we are going to add some fans for cooling. Also, we left gaps at the bottom front and at the back (where it goes into the trunk) to help with air circ.

Also, to all those concerned about the "boot", i think that you may have the wrong picture in your minds. I was going to cover the little towers in just the same manner in which you are all recommending. It is just that the material I was thinking of using was the same leather that we are going to use for covering the package tray. It is probably hard for you to picture, but it will not look like two little shifters at the back of the surround. I will keep you posted after I have a meeting with the interior people.
