There's hope for side exits and glasspacks...

...in the form of an H-pipe.

I cobbed together a Shelby-copy exhaust because it was fast, cheap, and easier than a full system. The neighbors were getting restless about me cruising around with open headers, so I had to do something. I got a pair of Thrush 24" glasspacks, some 2.5" tube, bends, clamps, etc, and made true duals.

Well, the loud hillbilly truck sound got real old, real quick. Later I blew some holes in the exhaust and put in an H crossover. The result is a more acceptable volume and better tone. Maybe not as good as a manufactured exhaust with good mufflers, but it did only cost ~$100 for the whole mess.

sounds good to me, I'm going to be doing the same thing...with the exception of using an X-pipe rather than a H-pipe...I'm using a V-6 though, hoping it will mellow and deepen the tone just a bit

Thanks ya'll. I thought I would throw it up here for anyone thinking of doing the same thing. I should do it again, but at full throttle instead of ~60%. As it was I ran out of road and brakes a little fast.

I'm starting to have second thoughts about later using an x-pipe. I have a 2.5" x crossover leftover from another car. I am also having second thoughts about putting tailpipes out the back.

The weird thing is that the idle sounds terrible, but I've heard some of that has to do with my split-pattern cam.

my 66 i drove in high school had straight thrush mufflers off the headers, exiting in front of the wheels... i never got tired of the sound, and if i recall there was no noticeable drone. it was really cool crossing a bridge, or anywhere else there were high curbs!
