For some reason I want to keep my GT40 heads. Why? Well because of some strange feeling of pride I would like to feel when I hit great times with an outdated head. Let's just say that aluminum heads never existed so please don't tell me to buy a pair of afr or trickflow or whatever.

Ok with that out of the way, what I want to do is run low 12s with my current combo(in my sig). I already hit a 13.0 @ 104.78 and I know those mphs are good for a 12.8 sec pass. My plans are to port my heads, get a 1.94 intake valve, deck the heads to get a 10.5:1 compression ratio, and even order a custom cam from Jay or Ed.

Now my questions are:

1. With a 10.5:1 compression ratio, will I hurt daily driveability?
2. I was warned about doing the 1.94 valve job since it'll leave the runner very thin and may crack into the water jacket. I was also told that it could also be too close to the head cylinder wall and it will restrict some air flow. He advised to stick with the 1.84 but get some aftermarket ones which it's stems are thinner and allow for more air flow. What do you guys think of that?
3. What will I have to know in order to order a custom cam from Ed or Jay? I know this is where the power will be.
4. What am I missing? 30lb inj? Bigger TB?
5. I really don't care for hp/tq numbers but do you think I'll hit my goal of a low 12 sec pass? And for kicks, what hp/tq gains will I see?

I know I'll definately need a tune so a dyno tune or PMS is in my plans. I also plan to get a tubular k-member with a-arms and coil overs for wieght reduction. What do you guys think, can it be done? Oh, and since the compression will be a lil higher, NITROUS is also in the play book. Now I don't plan to have it as a daily driver, but I would like for it to drive like one.

Can you change the sig fonts color? Its REALLY hard to see in darkmoon.

I got my reg. gt40's ported by thumper and they look great, if you want some pics let me know. With the DSS shortblock and 45+mill job on the heads I am in the 10.33-10.6:1 (depending on production var. and how much was removed in chamber smoothing). I have not had too much issue with pump prem 93 or whatever (not 91).

As far as getting ahold of Ed. or Jay, I would contact them and see what they want...do they want flow numbers from a specific flow bench for instance? With the heads getting ported getting them flowed for a custom cam will prob. be what they want since all stock and most ported head numbers will not be specific to how exactly your heads are worked.

On the valve thing I would PM thumper he knows his way around the iron heads.

30lbers and a 70mm will prob. not be a bad idea.

Post up pics if you will. Was the head work pretty expensive? Thumper? Is that his screen name, what about TMoss, I've seen that he knows a lot as well?

For the head work from thumper:

No personal experience with him but I've heard nothing but good about his work.

Which is why I e-mailed thumper but to no avail. I'll give him some time to respond, like mentioned above, he may be busy with race season.

TMoss, I had a local guy port my lower intake and it turned out pretty good but he didn't touch the upper. I would like to see if there's anything more you can do to it. Can you pm me a price for both upper and lower?

Blksn, what valves did you end up going with? How low can you go in rpms without bucking? Why didn't you opt to buying a custom cam from Ed or Jay? Do you have any 1320 numbers or hp/tq numbers for your combo? I plan to make mine a 306 once I blow this 302, but for now, it'll stay a 302. Sorry for all the questions.

I doubt you need any more porting - the lower is the restriction and since it's been done, the intake will more than likely serve the ported GT40 heads very well.

So far the idle/off idle part has been fine, I have my idle set at 850 and its rock solid, with no bucking. The valves IIRC are the stock 1.8's and whatever the exh. was with that combo. Not the big valves but good.

Been fighting new-ness bugs and I just dont have much time to mess with it and its been COLD. I have been having issues with the tune as well, my tweecer default does the update only and I didnt know it was an issue or to look for it until just recently (programming bug or something). I have not had a chance to make any runs since. I did do a local dyno drag thing ***PLUG PLUG*** http://www.dragracingonline.com/features/2007/ix_2-dyno-1.html and ran a 13.8 with a messed up tune issue. ***BIG thanks to Tmoss here again for the help last winter with the valvetrain setup helping hand.

With the heads unported and a factory tmoss ported lower with the TFS1 cam untuned I ran a 13.5 @102 with a 2.3 or 2.4 60ft (norm street tire 60ft is 2.0-ish for me).

I didnt go custom cam route as I already had done ALOT of reseach on what the unported gt40's like and had it for that setup...when I got them ported I just didnt have the money, all the money I already had in the heads before thumper did the work, plus the shortblock while in college I just had to save were I could. I am sure with getting them flowed and giving thoes numbers to ED or Jay would net some gains...just the cost for me to tear it back down for what 20 or so hp (guess)...I will just put in the 175 instead of the 150 shot jets I have for free.

My goals are to just have fun while learning and enjoy the thing on nice days. Once all the bugs are worked out, it runs what it runs. I would hope it will run a 13.2-12.8 N/A with a good 60ft. based on the times I ran with the unported setup...I think thats not too much to ask.

Thanks TMoss, the guy really did an awesome job and he only charged me $60. I could literally see clear through the whole runner to the floor while standing over it. He smoothed everything out very well. He also offered to do the head work on my car for cheap so I'm trying to learn as much as I can so I can tell him what I want done. (SBF) is an awesome site!!! I'm learning a lot there and it kind of sucks that I'm the stupid newbie there, but hey, I'm hanging out in places where Thumper, Joel, and Jay post so it ain't that bad.

So far from what I've gathered is to..
1. keep the stock valves
2. clean sharp edges on throat and bowl
3. get a 5 angle valve job
4. open up the pitch point on the pushrods (can you explain more on this?)
5. "D" out the exhaust port

It's good to know I won't have to pay to open up my valve runner, some Manley intake valves should work fine.

Blaksn, thanks for all the info, you've been really helpful.
