think I'm gonna go hit the track for the first time on Friday...any tips

Well My Boss has a older (maby 82) Impalla (I'll snap a few pics sometime) that he takes to the track now and then. He runs a 12.6 without the bottle and 12.1 with the bottle. some stuff gutted fuell cell in the back between the batery and 10 lb bottle and weighs 3800 lbs..

We are going friday as soon as we close up the shop...He want's me to bring my car (just a test and tune) I want to but I don't really have the funds to replace stuff that brakes or feed the addiction that I know will happen lol. but I think I will weld in some SFC's and bring my helmet just incase lol. Well this would be my first time driving at the track can some of you guy's give me some advice.

Take out un needed weight, 1/4 or less gas, slip the clutch, and drive like you stole it.

I haven't been either, but that's what i was told.

I kinda want to run in all stock weight form...just to see what times I get...then do some weight reduction and mods and see how much they all help.

go for it, you wont break anything. You wont need your helmet but you can bring it. Slip the clutch off the line for a good launch, and powershift her down the track, should get mid-low 14's

If you want your T5 to have a premature death, powershift it. If this is your DD, I do NOT recommend powershifting. But, it's all up to you.

Can't wait to get mine back to the track at the beginning of next month to see what times I get now that I have the 3.55s in.

should I burnout or just go for it....I might slap a old set of my friends 10" Hoosier slicks (from a sircle track car)

If you go on street tires, pass the waterbox and spin them a little just to clean them off. I had a guy at the track tell me if you just smoke them they just get more slippery. If you run slicks, smoke them and get them nice and warm.

I powershift every run down the track and its my daily driver

And if your running street tires, DO NOT go through the water box and just drop the clutch before you line up to get any gravel off, no need for a burnout around 25psi should be good. On slicks id do a nice 10 second burnout, though im not sure how circle racing slicks are compared to drag racing slicks.

they get soft as hell when warmed up...and kinda hard when cold.

I've seen a lot of people on here talking about how powershifting blows up the T5 in a hurry. We ALL know the T5 is a very weak tranny, I am not going to risk blowing the **** up only cause my car is my daily driver. At the track, I just stab the clutch as fast as I can and slam it into the next gear.

I agree, I've seen many people blow up the tranny from powershifting, and many people who powershift all the time and have no problems. Either way it is a fact that the T5 is a weak tranny, I chose to powershift, and respect and understand that other people dont.

And roland you should be fine with the street tires, just keep them at 25-28 psi, drive around the water box spin them, line up, rev to about 1.5-2k and slip the clutch dont drop it. Ive pulled a 2.0 60' on pretty used street tires, just go out there have fun, come back and tell us the results, youll see if either the mph is too low, or the 60' is too high, youll see what you need next. should I fell kinda nervous/worried. I have never done this before. it's just a test and tune so there will be cars slower than me I'm sure. I just hope my car runs faster than a 15 lol

Dont be worried, I still get nervious everytime I go to the line, its just the adrenaline, its so much fun. You can see cars go in a straight line all you want but theres nothing like it when your actually flying down the track. Test and tune will probably mean its just an open track and everything from a 17 year old kids moms escort to a twin turbo dodge viper will be there. Im exagerating of course but just go have fun, I was hoping to break 14 the first time I went to the track, and my first run was a 14.7, got it down to 14.3 by the end of the night.

Don't worry. You'll fell nervous and worried and stupid until the light goes and you hit the gas.

Then you won't be able to stop going.

The nervous anticipation doesn't go away that's what makes it fun; you think you're going to get a better run every time.

I also want to go because none of my friends have ever gone (just my friend/boss) and if I do I will have bragging right's lol...plus I will know for sure how fast my car is instead of guessing like they all do.

Like the other said,it your first time,just take it easy and get used to your car on the track.

Now,its not that important,but IMO getting a good light is awsome.Leave as soon as you see the last yellow come on.

Street tires,pull AROUND the water box! Give them a quick spin and your done.The circle track slicks will be just slightly better,but they may require a MASSIVE burn out to get the same amount of grip as the softer compound drag slicks.

Also,dont be nervious about the return road,there will be plenty of space.So make sure you have it floored to the beam at the big end.

Its theres a prefered lane,take that one.
