Was sanding some rust off the frame saturday morning, using diegrinder and wire brush. Never crossed my mind about me inhailing the "rust dust" we`ll call it.

Sunday morning on MuscleCar, Lou was doing a rust project, and talked about how important it is to wear a mask when dealing with it. Can you see where this is going yet.....

Monday noon, developed rather quickly a upper respatory disorder, been coughing all kinds of fleem up, and you guessed it, its rust colored of course.

Sure wish that episode of MuscleCar was on last week.....

Wow that must have been a lot of rust! Fortunately for me Health and Safety is huge in my field, so I have a full face respirator that I rarely use at work but gets frequently used at home when sanding or painting. Even one of those disposable masks would have saved you a few days of phleghm.

(oh and this probably should be in talk, interesting story nonetheless)

Stupid thing I did was use brake cleaner and not pay attention which way the tip was pointing............. you guessed it brake cleaner straight into the eye. The really stupid thing is that my wife said "shouldn't you be wearing your safety glasses?" 2 minutes earlier. You couldn't believe how fast I got my contacts out.

I was working on my buddy's Isuzu Pup in the snow, had a bad clutch master cylinder. Finally got the pedal assembly and cylinder out, was priming the new master.

Of course, just a few days before, my wife asked why I didn't have any safety goggles...

Pushed the rod in, and 'phwoooosh,' a stream of brake fluid hits my eye...

Oh how they laughed.

i recently bought a good respirator because of frequent sinus infections from painting without one and this was only rattle can spray paint i was using, even though i was using disposable masks. i was getting a sinus infection almost every time i painted anything out in the garage (quite frequent on a restoration) so i spent 40 bucks and bought a good 3M respirator that is good for dust, rust paint and all that stuff, i haven't had a sinus infection since.

I need a good resparator

Last night I took a turn for the worse, ran HIGH fever till about 5am, then the fever broke. I woke up at 6:30 in a freaking big puddle of sweat that stank bad. Fist thing I thought when I woke up was "what the heck is that smell?". And it was me. Been fine all day today though, I think its finally gone.

I figured once the....

mucus turned from rust colored to off white about 2 days ago i would be fine.....

I`m deffanently getting me a good resparator, I aint not going thru this again.

couple tips for anyone that gets a sinus infection like this after cleaning rust, dirt or painting;

1: get some nasal saline and use a lot of it to flush your nose and sinuses out after you get done cleaning or whatever, this will help to prevent the sinus infection and blow your nose a lot and keep flushing with the saline until you're not getting any colored snot when you blow your nose.

2: if you do get a sinus infection get some Afrin nasal spray, i sue the sever congestion formula, to help keep your sinuses open and clear

3: drink lot's of water and gatorade or even pedialyte because the fever will dehydrate you bad.

I hope you get to feeling better bro. Definitely invest in a decent respirator, not the paper masks.

I'm a bit of a safety freak. Here's me removing rust. Respirator, safety glasses, full face shield, jump suit, ear plugs, and gloves. I also have a twin-motor fan in the window -- one side drawing air in, the other side exhausting air out....

No seriously I agree that safety is very important. One other thing that hasn't been mentioned is ear protection especially when grinding. I always wear ear protection when I'm doing something loud. I figure if I lose my hearing in my old age it's going to be from listening to things I want to hear - not some grinder or a mower.

I`m healed!!!!

Last night slept like a baby, still got a small cough, but its productive, so I must be getting rid of the last of it now. My Dad was telling me last night how lucky I am I didnt get rust in my eyes. Apparently it turns into a very serious issue quickly.

Safety equipment is top of the list on next parts run.

I was welding once at the opening of my garage and turned to see a family that was walking down the street watching. I stopped welding and opened my hood” I didn’t want them to watch the funny blue light and get retina burn” the funny part was when I opened my hood the kids freaked. I had on a respirator and safety glasses on under the mask. And the dad told me latter that the kids thought I was a monster because I was making all the light and had no face under my mask.

FYI - For those interested in getting a respirator, the filter cartridges you should get are the P100 (HEPA) for particulates (these are usually purple/magenta) or an organic vapor filter (usually black) or, better yet a combo P100/OVA filter (which is purple and black). Not sure if you can get them at the local lowes/home depot, but some welding supply places have them. Places like Lab Safety have them.
