DETROIT -- Three people were killed when a driver who police believe was involved in a street race crashed into a van Sunday night on Detroit's west side, and then fled, according to police.

The crash occurred at the intersection of Eaton and Greenfield, Local 4 reported. The drivers of a Ford Mustang and a Dodge Charger were allegedly racing, when the Mustang crashed into the Chevrolet Astro minivan, according to the station's reports.

Investigators believe the Mustang, which was left at the crash site, was stolen. Police are searching for both drivers and the Dodge Charger.

Three adults who were inside the van were killed, Local 4 reported. A fourth person, who may have been walking near the scene at the time of the crash, was injured, according to police. She was transported to a hospital for treatment.

The names of the victims were not released.

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash or with information on the drivers involved should contact Detroit police.

There are already a couple threads on this. The Mustang had been carjacked.

It can't be a stolen Mustang that was car racing??
I worked 26 years in the media. Respectable media get their information from the police. They don't make it up.
The story said the Mustang was stolen. It did also say it was believed to have been street racing with a Dodge Charger. No word on whether it was stolen.
Do you have a police report to contradict that?
Who says a person who steals a Mustang wouldn't street race?
You can't make street racing sound OK. It is not and it kills people regardless of whether the cars involved were stolen or not.

If what you say is true, can't your local station be sued for libel? Those are serious charges you're making, and if they're true, that station could be in for some real trouble. I wouldn't stand for it, if someone totally changed around what I'd said. They might even hear from my lawyer depending on the details.

now now they dont make half their stories up. They just get real stories and twist them to sound like whatever the station wants it to. Im not saying steet racing is good or bad but the media and everyone thinks that if a car that can go decently fast and gets into a wreck it is because they were racing. Street racing has got a bad rap from the media. again for those of you who night want to start flamming this i am not saying street racing is good and doesnt caused some issues but i believe it has been blown out of proportion by the media. People are stupid and will do stupid things. The bigger toy you give them the more damage they will creat with their stupidity. Whether they are driving a mustang or any other sports car or a geo metro. Doesnt make it right its just a fact of life.

This is a tragic thing but I would question the credibilty of whether it was an actual street race or someone speeding around and a charger happened to be next to him. Street racing may not be a "good" thing but it certainly isn't as bad as it is potrayed. Contrary to popular belief you can safely street race. of course, doing it in populated areas or around blind intersections is stupid and where the real danger lies in street racing.

Like was said the news media (t.v. in particular) will tell you what you want to hear. So they will tell you how bad street racing is and manipulate facts to make it look worse than it is just because most people view it as very dangerous.

Anyways, sorry to go off on a tangent but I hate how the media always is quick to just state it was because of street racing when more than likely there source just assumed the cars were racing because they were by each other.

Again, as a fomer member of the media who now teaches journalism I resent all of these comments. There are good and bad people in any profession. Respectable media want to get things right. They depend on sources such as police, witnesses, etc. They don't make it up.
And libel is an issue if someone's character is damaged and the media was at fault.
The media is a business and any business which continually mistreats its customers or lies won't be in business long.
Some media do things they shouldn't. Even the New York Times had reporters who made up stories.
I've encounted rude sales people, mechanics who lied, and the list goes on and on.
The fact is the police report said the cars were racing and the media reported that.
Street racing does kill people. You can't escape that fact.
If you want to race, do it at the track.

I've been in business for 21 years. In that time I've had many dozens of stories written for local papers and have been astounded that there has never been even one get it right.

All have had at least one completely wacky misquote, fact, idea.... Just wild stuff. None of these have been meanspirited, just wrong. In fact we've never had anything but positive stories, but getting it right has never happened.

Look at the stories of mass rapes, murders... coming out of the New Orleans Hurricane disaster. Not only exagerated, but almost entirely fabricated. And we're talking major networks and newspapers.

The media is in the business of sensationalism. Big stories sell and sell for big money.

Nothing personal as I'm sure there are very many well meaning people in the media, but by and large, I rate them only marginally higher than political candidates for honesty and accuracy.

By the way street racing is dangerous, racing at a track is dangerous, driving a car is dangerous. People caught street racing should have to suffer the legal consequences. I have absolutely gotten a little wacky when some smuck in a porsche pulls up next to me wanting to run.... Didn't get caught! Yea for me!

Believe what you want. I still disagree. And I again ask what business is perfect? I've been trying to find a decent mechanic to fix a brake problem on a 1966 Mustang convertible. I've spent lots of money and still have the original problem.
People lie. If the media prints what they said, who is at fault?
We could go on and on about this. Let he without sin (or who doesn't make mistakes) continue throwing stones.
And, my opinion, anyone who races on the street is a fool and a potential murderer.
