Well put the car up on jack stands last Saturday so I could drain the oil pan and when I pulled the plug the magnet at the end had metal slivers on it. I knew this was bad news and I pulled and pushed the crank pully and had way to much movement. I knew right then that the thrust bearing was ate up. Got the engine pulled Monday and began tearing it down got the crank out and the bearing journal was ok but the thrust face on the crank was groved. Call the engine machine shop and was informed that they could repair the thrust face on the crank, so I dropped off the crank Wednesday and it should be ready no later than Tuesday.
Now this is a Scat 9000 cast stroker crank. I did some research on the web and found that thrust bearing failure on a engine with a manual transmission can be only 1) a bad machined thrust face on the crank, 2) inproper adjusted release bearing, 3) riding the clutch, 4) high clutch pressure when using a performance clutch with very high spring pressure.
Read a thread were someone using the Scat 9000 stroker crank had 2 engines go bad due to excessive end play on crank. The last engine was a 347 that only had 25-35 passes on the motor. Found that these cranks have a ruff surface on the crankshaft's thrust face that needs to be polished off. When I got the #3 main cap off the crank and I looked at the front thrust face of the crank and saw crisscross lines on the thrust face. Clevite states that if these lines are on the thrust face of the crankshaft they need to be removed before installing the crankshaft. These lines feel smooth to the touch but in a engine they will eat up the thrust bearing. Also I'm gonna change out the Zoom Stage 3 clutch to a more streetable clutch. Only had 1600 miles on engine.
