The other day i was messing around with a bimmer on the highway i guess you can say i went higher then i normally go with the Rpms...around maybe 5000 or so...Anywas when i got home i heard a ticking noise while idleing...tick tick tick....and i know its not exhaust...because if i rev the motor up a little it goes away when the idle drops back down its there again...This did this once before then as suddenly as it came it went away but now its back again...any ideas on what it could be....? Oh yeah i noticed that i do use a little oil it was maybe a half a qt low after that freeway run...now its full again i added some last nite but the tick is still there....sounds like its coming from the valve covers.....you can hear it in the exhaust too...but like i said i know its not an exhaust leak because this noise was there a month back then it was gone now back again....Thanks...........

check oil pressure and level. i know what your talking about and in my experience it has been collapsing lifters from lack of oil pressure.

change your oil and filter, run 10 30 and then see.

have you done ANYTHING to the car underhood wise?

No not recently just what is my sig...thats all...it sounds like a lifter it did this before and went away....the oil has about a 1000 miles on it since the last oil change...The only thing i can think it is that i have the stock intake which had all the smog stuff i dont have an EGR vave space plate and the intake get really hot maybe the oil is breaking down or the oil gets somekind of a gas/exhaust type mixture and thins out?

hows your oil pressure?

i dont really think lifters fail unless you run them completely flat, but still at then its possible to prime them back up.

if you can think of anything else i would start by replacing the lifters.

do you have a trustworthy mechanic you can talk to?
