hey guys you all have helped me so much through the past and I need a little more help here it is. I set the timing of my car and when the car idles the rpm shoots up and down about 300 rpm does that mean the timing is too advanced or too retarded. Another question, just making sure turning the distributor clockwise is advancing it right?

More info. Do you have a timing light? When you talk about the RPM oscillating, is that with the SPOUT in or out?

I have had them 'hunt' a little after playing with the timing (right after I toss the SPOUT back in), but usually it figures itself out real quick.
Good luck.

Yeah, one needs to remove the SPOUT to set timing, if using timing marks as a reference.

If you are winging it and turning the dizzy back and forth without timing light input, you dont need to remove the SPOUT.

Here is a write up which outlines some stuff. Tim (Stang22) on this site has a write up on his website, as well.

Good luck.

i dont think the timing has anything to do w/ your idle surges. Yes, clockwise advaces timing.

Generally getting a new idle air bypass and/or oxygen sensers fix that prob. Cleaning them can sometimes work but might mess up the IAC. There is some debate on that.
