what degree should i set my timing at when running a 125 shot of nitrous on a dry kit on a 94 mustang gt? i installed the kit, but am setting the timing now, and want to make sure i get it right, so i dont blow up my car.

Apparently my ex-husband made that mistake.

I'd set base timing about 8 degrees.

ok, so i set the timing at 8 degrees and it felt like something was off in my car. my acceleration wasn't as fast, and anytime i would rev the engine or punch the gas real hard (no nitrous) i would hear a loud pop in the exhaust. so i moved the timing back up to 12*. any suggestions or reasons why this would have happened? ways to fix it? the only other modifications i have done recently is add a bbk 255lph fuel pump. i plan on adding some 24 lb injectors, just dont have the money for them yet.

2* from the stock 10* should really make no felt difference much less a backfire/popping.

Did you take the spout out to do this? If you did not that was your issue. Without the spout removed the eec will try to still take control of the timing.

You're probably getting an issue with the computer relearning the timing. If you time the car to run on the spray, it's going to run worse on motor. Optimum is to get an automatic timing retard like an MSD box or something.

loosing 2* from the stock 10* should not in any way shape or form result in popping or backfiring in the intake. The computer does not relearn timing...it expects 10* as the starting point and goes from there depending on load/idle tables there is no learning end of timing like the KAMFR for fuel on our cars.

One other thing that can cause this if you took the spout out is that the HB is spun on its rubber insert. Is the HB the stock or factory replacement unit? It is a common issue and will cause your timing to be off. Unless you pulled the dizzy out I would look at the HB next and see if it has spun.

8 is good and I would check to see if the hb is having a problem.

Not sure what an HB is, but i did not remove the distributor when i set the timing, i just loosened the bolt that held it down, and turned it while monitoring the timing with a timing light.

Essentially where you are getting your timing reading from.

Harmonic Balancer or Harmonic Dampener is the at the front of the motor and like said above is were the numbers you see used to time the motor. The lower pulley is attached to the HB.

What is common on our year 94-95 mustangs is the rubber part between the inner and outer ring works itself out/become loose and the the outer ring will spin or the move in relation to the inner ring. This will make the timing marks inaccurate as they have now moved from their correct setting.

Commonly the rubber piece will work itself out from in between the two steel parts of the balancer. You will see either a big chunk hanging out or a section that has worked itself out and it will look uneven compared to the rest of itself. This is not 100% as the outer ring has been know to simply spin enough to make the timing marks inaccurate...for example timing is set at 10* or there about from the factory. When the ring spins a little it may be pointing at 6*. One goes to bump up the timing and thinks they are going from 6* to 14* when actually they are going from 10* to 18*.
