I had to replace the pickup coil a few months ago. I've just now got around to adjusting the timing when what do I see? No marker to reference the timing. Don't know where it went. And now I don't know what my timing is at. The car runs but it pings under heavy acceleration. I know I can just fiddle with it until I get ballpark, but I would like to have it fairly exact at 13 or 14*. What do I do? Should I find top dead center on the number one piston and try to mark it from there? Whats the best way for going about this? Please help.

Pull the spark plug on #1 and find TDC and mark it on the balancer. While you still may be off a degree, you'll be a hell of a lot closer than you are now.

preciate it... whats the best way to locate tdc on #1... stick a pencil in the hole and try to measure it as someone slowly turns the crank?

Pull the spark plug and stick your finger over the hole. Turn the engine over and as the piston is coming up in the bore, you'll hear the air starting to come out. As soon as that sound goes away, you've hit TDC (or very close to it). It's more of a "feel" thing than anything. Do it a few times over and you'll see what I'm talking about.
