I searched and could not find my answer ok .. my buddy recently put a pip sensor in my car he said that my timing will be off a little it pinged a little bit but kind of went away. So i went and got my car timed today by a buddy and now he put it where it should be and its pinging bad when i get on it. Does it have to reset its self or did he just not adjust it right. I know he knows what hes doing he said it will eventually stop?

You have to pull the .... umm. I cant remeber what it called. :bang: But you have to unplug it to set the base timing. Its a little gray plug on the passenger side fender around the intake tube.

And did anyone check the timing before the dizzy was pulled for the PIP replacement? This is always a good idea, in case the timing was set at 6 or 8* already, or the balancer's outer ring has slid (effectively making the timing marks useless).

Also ensure that your advance knob is set to zero if you use a dialback timing light.

Listen to what you hear above and beyond all else. If you hear pinging, back that timing down till you dont. That is ALL that matters - setting timing with a light just gives us a starting point and point-of-reference to share with other members.

Good luck.

Im going to have to have it retimed then by someone who knows what there doing. Then i have to fix a ground wire or something causing my cluster to mess up bad. Long day tomarrow

A tooth off dosen't matter.....you can turn it to compensate....

What I do, is Set the timing to 14 btdc then take it out for a nice warm WOT run, and if i hear timing i back it off 2 degrees and so on till i get NO KNOCK...

you cant just time it and leave it if you want peak power.......if you just want factory setting get it to 10 btdc and be happy.

Kyle is right - the one tooth off thing is a bit of a misnomer. The only time anyone is one tooth off is if something is physically keeping the dizzy from turning further to get into time.

Timing it is real simple - have some confidence in yourself. :nice: As we've said, just dial the timing down a hair for right now - what you hear is all that matters. If you retard the timing too far, an indication is that your hot, no load idle will be real low. I'd rather be real retarded (well, I already am :p ) than a little too far advanced.

Good luck.

Thanks guys your a lot of help so ill make sure its set to 10 and try to see if it will stop pinging i dont know what he put it on yesterday as soon as i get off work i will solve this problem i will update you guys THANKS :) !!!

The whole ... "One Tooth Off" thing has always been a sore spot for me :(

Some say ... "That is a bunch of internet myth" :notnice:
and
Others say ... "Of course it can be a tooth off" :nice:

Me ... Myself ... and I ... We fall in that last camp of folk :)

I have always seen it from an original reference point of installation ;)
so
I've always seen both camps of peeps thoughts to be valid :D

I only posted here to once again show ... JT's just Plain Ole Good :Word:

I mean ... Look at those words of wisdom in the quote :hail2:

He tells the truth :nice:
He tells the truth that represents both sides of this issue :nice:
and
He tells it all ... Simply in just a few easy to understand words :nice:

Now me on the other hand ... I would have written a page to do it :rlaugh:

JT ... I'm glad we got you here my friend

yeah, 10* before top dead center. Maybe he set it at 10* after top dead center.

On the factory balancer, there is 30 llllll 20 lllllll 10 llllllll 0 lllllllll 10. If you set it to the last 10, that is 10*atdc. You want it on the bold 10
