timing question

hi new here i just bumped up timing but now it seems to have charging problems the amp gauge goes up and down when i turn on the heater and radio or lights it didnt do it before any suggestions

id say its a fluke , changing timing should have no affect on the charging system

Changing the timing won't have any affect on charging. I assume that you mean voltage drops (not amps) when you turn on the lights, heater and radio. If you are talking about this at idle, that's pretty normal. The gauge should though show increased volts as the rpm's increase from idle.

Did you use a timing light or just wing it? If you accidentally retarded timing or forgot to replace the SPOUT connector, the idle will be low and very finicky with regard to alternator output.

Though I'm sure it's not the case here, it's surprising how many people just turn the dizzy a little and don't check the actual timing with a timing light.

well i was using a timing light and i loosened the bolt and bumped the dizzy but then couldnt see the freakin timing marks then the stupid timing light clip on the spark plug popped off and broke talk about bad luck i guess i will just buy new one and check and the stupid timing marks on these cars are a pita too see my sixty six is right there

Is the SPOUT connector installed?

I use a silver sharpie to mark the balancer whereever I want to set the timing (10, 12* etc).

I'd have to agree with JT on this one. I believe you just got the timing slighty screwed up. Just reset the timing and retest. Take a silver marker as JT suggested or some white out and mark 10* BTDC (very important it's before top dead center and not after top dead center).

thanks guys got new light yeah it was way off it was easier just to remove the fluid overflow so the light could get in there and i marked with pen even the guys mark i bought it off of was way off he had nail polish on dizzy runs great now thanks peace homies

Can ya bump up the timing on a 95 I thought the computer would set it back . If so what do ya recommend Mines still pretty much a stock Cobra.

Yes you can bump it. The EEC doesnt change global spark if you make a timing change.
