Timing VS Chip??

I have a 95 5.0 with a2.5 in h-pipe, a 70mm TB, and a bbk cold air intake. I was checking out chips for this car and found out that you have to run premium in the car when you install one. Also I was told that if you advance the timing it is the same as chipping it, is this true? and if it is can I run regular fuel if I advance the timing??. Also it it safe? and which way do you turn the distributor??

The only chip really worthwhile is a custom one. They can be tuned for any grade fuel.

Advancing the timing usually means a higher octance fuel, but you can advance it a little, just to where it doesn't ping with regular or midgrade or whatever you use and you're good to go.

Pinging is bad for the motor. Advance it as far as you can without pinging. The reason you want the higher octane gas is because the higher the octane, the more resisitant it is to pre-ignite. Oh and it absolutely is worth the time of doing it. I gained 3 tenths with advancing my timing and power shifting.

You won't need a chip until you get more serious with the mods. With an aftermarket cam, you just about need a chip just to get it to run, and with aluminum heads you need a lot more range for timing than you can get by adjusting the base timing.

I dunno about having to change the chip or prom tuning for a cam. I have heard of people running some pretty modded combos and the stock ecu doing just fine.

of course, once the mods add up to a certaint point, PMS tuning on a dyno should yeald some extra ponies

My setup is pretty mild and is driveable but I would love to get a tune to iron out the little driveability issues and maybe pickup a couple extra ponies

But for basically stock I would mot put a chip in it like everybody else has said, wait till you get a cam and that should really come after the heads and intake.

As for the timing you can always make two marks on the dizzy one for you normal daily driving and one for the weekend when you got some higher octane in it, just throw a dizzy wrench in your car.
