My wife and I just bought a 2001 GT auto. convertible with 50K miles. The problem I have is with the traction control. The light on the button stays on all the time. I push it and it doesn't do anything; the light on the switch stays on and the light on the cluster doesn't come on. I know the light on the dash works because it comes on when I start the car and then times out. There are no lights on on the cluster; no cel or abs, nothing. I ordered a new switch from the dealer and it should be here in a couple days, but I'm shooting in the dark and I don't know for sure if it is the problem. Anybody got any ideas. Thanks

i am pretty sure i remember seeing the traction control unit in the engine compartment on the pasinger side behind the radiator. i think it said trac.? i am just throwing this out there. you might want to check the wires going to it. it might also be shot.

the car has been tuned and the traction has been disabled. my car is the same way

you should be thankful, our TC sucks!!

Do you know if this was done at the dealership or a speed shop? I understand what your saying about the tc sucking, but my wife is the primary driver of this car and I want it to be as safe as posibble. Shes a good driver and has alot of respect for the car, but this is her first V8 RWD car and and I don't want her to get suprised in the rain. Anyway, if I want to get it turned back on, any ideas on where I need to take the car to? Thanks

it has to be tuned to turn it back on.
find out who the previous owner was and call and ask where it was tuned. that same shop should be able to go back and alter the tune to turn the trac on, and leave the rest of the tune the same.

if you cant find out whop the tuner is you'll be stuck paying for an all new tune

I guess I'm lucky because the used car dealer I got the car from had the title to the car with the last owners names and addresses on it. That info is usually long gone or n/a when a dealer gets involved. Hopfully they will change in back for free or for a decent price. If not, I feel if the tires are in good shape the car should do fine with smart driving. I never have had any problems with my 89 5.0/5spd with 3.55's in the rain, but I drive like I have some sense. Thanks

If u don't find the guy or get a decent price to fix it. Ur wife should be fine as long as shes not flooring it in the rain or going around corners fast , only then the rear end likes to do its dance.

What's the chances that it has a hardware TC mod installed versus one in the tune?

Would really suck if his car's ECM has been modified... might want the local Ford dealer to re-flash with stock calibration if this is the case. Does the car have any other obvious modifications?

U.M.

I hope it has not been modified. The car looks to be very clean and totally stock with the exception of flowmasters. Never wrecked or painted according to the carfax and I've looked it all over and found zero signs of overspray, misalighnments, mismatched colors, or paint on molding. None of the nuts or bolt heads on anything show signs of wrench work. The hood studs do show signs that they have been off by the missing paint on the treads, but I don't know if this is from the factory or not; they may have painted the hood and put it on after the engine was installed. Do you guys hood stud treads have paint on them or do they look like the nuts have been run over them? Also, does anyone know where the engine/car number is stamped on the block so I can check to see if the car has the original engine, which I think does. These new edge cars are a new adventure for me. After years of messing with the 5.0's, this is a new learning experince. As for the tune, I don't know. The car runs great and has good power. I don't know if it is the norm, but from a dead stop with no passenger it, it hooks good won't spinning, and will bark the tires when it shifts to second. It shifts normal during regular driving. It idles with-in spec and gets 22 mpg. I know there is only so much a tune or chip will do to a stock 5.0, but are the results more beneficial on the edge cars? I feel the car runs like a stock GT auto should. Its fun, but not as fun as a 5spd, but its the wifes and I still have my 5.0 to beat around in.

Are you saying when you push the button the light on the cluster does not come on? It should no. When you go out and spin the rear tires does it come on. It should.

When i push the button, nothing happens; no lights on the dash. I haven't try to spin the tires on purpose, but it has chirped second gear and the light on the dash did NOT come on.

does the ABS light come on when you start the car?

if an ABS isn't working and the ABS dash light is out the T/C button will be lite continually

the T/C button doesn't directly effect the light on the dash when T/C is on (light on the button off) and the tires try to spin, the T/C kicks in and the light on the dash comes on briefly...when the T/C is off (light on the button on) the dash light will only turn on when the car is started.

Does that make sense?

No, I have that unit. When you start the car, it defaults to the last setting prior to starting the car.

For instance, if you had the TC "off" before shutting down the car, when you start it the next time, it will again default to "off." Same with "on."

You are also able to turn it "off" and "on" while driving, and it will again default to the last setting.

The ABS lite comes on when the key is turned on and then times out like the others after the engine is started.

Well then... I guess you need to go throw some water on the driveway and light up the rear hides and watch the dash for the T/C light. The behavior you're describing from the T/C button light is exactly the behavior you'll get when the T/C has been disabled via ECM reflash/tune.

Thanks

Just so everone will know, I talked to the previous owner of the car last night and he said that he did buy a tuner and he set the car up with the traction control off. He also told me that the car has had 3.73's installed in it also. I knew it ran to strong just to be a stock auto convertible with 3.27's in it. But anyway, lots of other good info to; never wrecked, trans serviced @ 30K and all other work done buy the Ford dealer. Should be a good car. Thanks for the info.
