Do all GTs come standard with traction lock? How can I tell if mine has it? When I turn off my traction control and nail the throttle turning left my car will slide, but when I nail it turning right, only the right wheel spins and I can't slide. Is this normal? My car is still under warranty so if not i'd like to get it fixed. I just want a way to know if this is normal operation.

99% of limited slip units will give you that spinning tire on right turns. There isn't enough pre load on the clutch packs to give full torque to both wheels in corners.

Keep in mind that the right wheel is the main drive wheel too.

And the reason that the right wheel spins easier than the right is simple physics.

The drive shaft counter-clockwise looking from the back. This is in turn twisting the rear axle by pushing the drivers side tire down and lifting the passenger side wheel up.

And this is why it is always easier to spin the right tire than the left.

I also agree that the clutch packs aren't preloaded much. It varies from car to car. Some seem to be tighter than others.

I actually made them repair/adjust/replace my '91 LX5.0 rear diff. under warranty (which they did) because it was so loose. They never did tel me what they did, but it was ALOT tighter afterwords.

Yes all GTs come standard with trac-lok and mine does the same thing as yours. I'm planning on taking it in to have it checked out and maybe while it's open install some 3.73s.

You have a on/off button "trac lock" by the cigg lighter to turn it off (and the amber light on the switch will lite up when you turn it off) - by default, when you start the car, it turns on. When it is on and in use (meaning you are gettin 'er out of control) a little green light shines on your instrument panel. Looks kinda like a blower or turbo...wishful thinking!
I leave mine on in the rain, but turn it off when it's dry.

I think people are confusing trac lok (posi) with traction control.

And the pre load can be set to ways with a firmer spring in the center or you can use larger shims. The best way to do it it with larger shims since they don't make a harder spring, it's just that some are firmer than others.

Replacing the shims can be difficult to the novice but is about a 2 hour job otherwise.

I bet I would have a hard time talking the dealer into tightening it up for free under warranty. I'd have a hard time proving that it needs being fixed and it's a factory defect. I just remember that my friend had a 98 GT and the traction-lock would lock up and slide either way, turning right or left. It's really annoying

Don't circumvent the REAL problem here . . . that your car simply doesn't have enough torque to steer with the throttle yet. No worries -- this is nothing that money can't fix. Throw some cash at some mods and you'll have what you're looking for. Then, you'll be complaining that you can't break the tires loose from 30 mph . . . again, nothing that some more money can't fix.

All of the power in the world will just make the right tire spin faster through right hand turns. It is a diff. problem not a power problem.

So my question is: is it a problem and can it be fixed under warranty?? More power definitely won't fix the problem.

if your car is still under warranty, and you haven't done any mods to the drivetrain and engine, then it should be covered. Just take it in and have them check it out

One more question

Hey, Sorry to bring this issue back up, but I finally contacted my local service department about my traction lok question. I can't see why when I turn left I can feel the traction lok kick in, but when I turn right (from a stop) and get on it I get the one wheel peel. I download alot of burnout videos, and I know the Cobras and Trans Ams don't have this problem. Like I said earlier, my friend's 98 GT will slide either way, so.... When you guys floor it from a stop, turning right, do both wheels lock in or just the right one. I'm asking about an unmodded car, or atleast unmodded rear differential. I'm having a hard time explaining it to the service man. He wants me to prove it.




....She kept give me some crap about not listening, I don't know I wasn't really paying attention....

These differentials work better then the Torsen's in the F-Bodies. They really don't like to fully engage when turning right they need equal load to work 100%.

The preload on the clutch packs in these diffs. vary alot. You may have a diff. that was set up really loose.

So... bottom line... Is there anyway I can talk the service dept. into fixing it? Or is it not really a problem?

Do you know what kind of differential it is?
