The t5 transmission from 83-95 calls for Dex III. Looked it up in the book at work.

What source did you get that from? Why would Ford call for GM fluid?

im pretty sure that any atf will work as well as the next, as its just a lubricant in the tranny, unlike an auto where its actually used as hydraulic fluid, to build a certain amount of pressure.

A T5 needs ATF because of the synchros it uses, never use anything else

You're wrong. The syncro's are standard brass. The reason for using thin oil like ATF is because the oil passages are very small in all the components of the T-5.

Should I go to GM to get the syncromesh fuild? I need it for the TKO. Are there any inexpensive alternatives? What car should I say i have if they ask?

The GM synchromesh is for transmissions with bronze synchros (TKO, 3550, etc...) If it's a T-5 use ATF.

Today at Murry's i got some Mobil 1 synthetic ATF Dexron/Mercon. On the side it says Automatic Transmission fluid. Should i take it back or is it the same thing? its for a T5.

Many folks have run the M1 ATF in their T5's. I have not but I dont see an issue.

Good luck.

I use the cheap crap like 1.50 a quart. The fluid isn't pressurized or applied to clutchs (like someone already said) All it's there is for lubrication. All I see in syntectic is longer life, and less break down.

I switched out the Redline I had to Mobil 1 and I have noticed smoother shifts on cold starts and even better when it warms up.

Mobil 1 rocks!
