tranny problems

My AOD tranny has acting up. If I drive it for more than 10 minutes and then try to put it in reverse sometimes I have to rev it to make it go in. When I first start the car it works fine, if I let it sit idle for a while it will go in no problem. Any Ideas??? TIA

Only in reverse.All forward gears work fine

Thats a tough one then. Im pretty sure the clutch pack for reverse is the same as used for 1st gear just that one of the bands are applied to make it move in reverse rather than forward. Maybe someone else can shed some light on this.

I can let it idle for 10 min and it will shift in reverse no problem

check the fluid level first...sounds like its low to me

Try this when it won't go in reverse. Put it in first and move your car forward about 1 inch or just engage first gear. Then try to directly put it in reverse and see what it does. I've found this to work on many T-5 tranny's when they won't easily go in reverse and this trick seems to work 95% of the time. Good luck!

Auto's are a completely different beast that a standard. Gear engagement is all done by hydraulics not by actually engaging gear teeth.

I can't answer your question as I have never had that problem but you might want to check out www.clickclickracing.com and post up in their forums and see if any of the guys over there can help you out. The site has some good tech on auto transmissions and there are some guys over there that are very knowledgable.

I know a little bit about the AOD. Have you ever done the old 1-D-1 shift? All AOD owners have at one time or another, I have myself. You have a reverse band and when this shift is done the line pressure gets dumped and the reverse and/or the overdrive band can apply, causing premature band failure. I'd suggest having that checked. Or the reverse clutch pack could be worn and circulating the fluid lets it engage like normal.
