Im new to these forums so im sorry if im asking questions that may have been answered before.
I have an 04 auto GT and i was told a transgo shift kit would help with the speed in which the gears changed, essentially making it into a Manuel without a clutch. But thats just what i gathered from it. My question is which shift kit would i use for my car and what shifter should i go with? and anything im leaving out? I've read that B&M is not the best choice. However, on youtube there were some that used a B&M shifter in conjunction with a transgo kit. again im sorry if im asking stupid questions im new to this. looking forward to seeing what you guys think.

Tuner bro, SCT, Diablo...or somethin, of that nature would suit you better the a shift kit, you can choose shift points, firmness etc.

every time i would drag someone it would goto shift into 2nd then neutral out, then the trans shop put in a stage 2 kit, and it did the same thing, i finally get rid of it and got a Performance Automatic Valve Body, and it was 10X stronger, harder and faster and it never neutraled out, i would go with PA over transgo, and def the J-Mod over transgo.

Leg3nd:

J-mod fanboy here.

TCCoA.com, Tech Articles/Transmissions, then "Transmissions 101" and the two install articles by A-Train.

Jerry Wroblewski is a former Ford Transmission Engineer so you know that his series of articles can be taken to the bank. ]

The shift kit article is out of date so please do not use it as a reference.

Sorry to hijack a little here-just bought and installed a j-mod kit I bought from factorytech.com. It came with a predrilled plate and gaskets as well as the accumulator pistons and spring (brown) for the 1-2 accum. I installed this in my wife's '04 GT. I couldn't install the 2-3 piston because the bottlecap is a pressed in unit and I really didn't think it wise to pry and potentially damage the housing.

...but, now I have a couple issues...

The 1-2 shift is great-shifts very firm, but if I stomp first gear, it feels like either the tranny is taking off in second (but it does shift to second), or fighting itself to gain rpm. Before I did the mod, if I matted the go pedal, the tc would flare a little, I'd get tirespin and the car would move along smartly. It also has some weird stuff tc lockup/unlock while in OD.

Also, when the car is warmed up and the revs are low, the tranny almost feels like it's low on fluid; there's a noticeable lag when I accelerate from a stop. This does not happen when the car is cold-like sitting overnight.

I've been told by at least three or four people that I need to tune that stuff out, but I'm not familiar with tuning autos. I have a friend here with a Marauder complete with J-mod, but he has yet to send me his tune as a baseline and I don't want to break anything by ignoring it.

Can anyone send me some tuning tips or a program to help me out with this? I have access to an SCT program, but I'm not a guru... If someone wouldn't mind sending me a pm, or emailing me at j_hicks5418@yahoo.com I'd really appreciate it.

txstang84:

I am not a guru either. I can send you 'my stuff' (Excel file for shift/lock and pressure schedules and a value file of all my current tune since you won't be able to read my SXA2 calibration/ProRacer file). You need SCT's Advantage program to adjust your tune. Do you have it? There are some good descriptions for many of the auto functions and tables and, often, some recommended values.

There is something satisfying about doing it from scratch, imho. Start with shift schedules and lock/unlock schedules and go from there. Datalog to see what the transmission is doing and make more adjustments. Getting things right takes a bit of time but the results will be worthwhile.
