Toploader 4 speed. No overdrive, but you'll never break it.

true. aftermarket companies also sell gearsets for the t5 that can make them very strong, if you are looking for an overdrive. Probably overkill for you, but a tko-500 or tko-600 can hold whatever you are putting out.

plan on ~$2K for a built t5 or around the same for a tko. the t5 fits like it was made for it, whereas you'd have to cut the trans tunnel on a tko install

If you don't mind doing some modifications to your car you may want to look at a T56 6 speed transmission. I just completed the conversion and am looking forward to getting it back on the road. If you use lowering motor mounts and make a crossmember (or use Ron Morris Uni Crossmember)you can get about a 3* pinion angle. I chose it because of the 2 overdrive gears. 5th gear is a ratio like a road race TKO500 or TKO600 (about .80) and the 6th gear is like the normal overdrive of your T5 (about .64). I am not positive on the actual ratio and am to lazy to look it up right now but you get the idea.

What I did not like about the T5 I had before was how sluggish the car felt going into 5th gear at about 65 mph. Now 5th gear in the T56 will be perfect for that speed and the 6th gear will be great for cruising at 70. Not the easiest swap compared to the others but I think it will be great for me. I am not one for taking the easy route so why start now. LOL!

I believe the 3550 has the same dimensions at the TKO series, therefore slight crossmember trimming in the tunnel will be necessary.

I have a T5z behind my 347 stroker and have not had any problems yet. Although this completely depends on how you drive the car. If you do any track time and plan to race, then T5 is probably not a good choice. But if you are just into "spirited" driving as I am, then I think you will find it fine. Note the T5z and or World Class has some beefier/stronger components, so you shoudl seek one of these out if going with a T5. If you definately want/need an overdrive transmission, the T5 is the only one currently that does NOT require any surgery to get the proper pinion angle. This is a pretty heavily covered topic on this forum, just do a little searching and you will have plenty to read in order to draw your own conlcusion.
