All,
took my car (69 fastback) in to get some rims put on and it came back with a problem. the car will not go into park (AT) and it is like all of the gears shifted up one. for example putting it into park puts the car in reverse, putting it into reverse actually puts it into neutral, neutral into drive, etc. The guy at the tire shop says linkage but wasn't sure. of course redoing the emergency brakes (drums) in the rear has not been a priority up til now so I have a block begind it to stop her as there is no park. She still drives ok the gears and the shifter are just off. Is this a really bad issue or just an adjustment??? how much would it cost if i had t take it in??? also the stering is very loose and i am told there is n adjustment for that, any suggestions?

thanks
-dan

It just needs the linkage adjusted.

Might need new motor and transmission mounts too. And be careful with it, they were known to jump into reverse from park without warning. Been there, done that. It ain't fun chasin down your car that's heading for the highway in reverse. The linkage isn't hard to adjust, it's a do it yourself operation, slightly easier to do with a freind's help. Get the rear up on jackstands, start the car, find neutral with the linkage lever on the transmission. Adjust the shifter linkage rod to where the shifter matches the position on the trasmission and install the linkage rod back in place.

i also would start by checking the mounts for condition, if one is suspect or bad replace the lot of them, and the adjust the trans linkage.
