The shifter should be all the way forward. However, if it is a later tranny installed in an early stang that had a green dot C4 in it originally then it probably won't line up with any of the other indicators, and if it engages in park it may not have the travel to engage in 1st. If it engages in first, then it may only reach reverse when pushed all the way forward.
