After changing the ball joints this afternoon (97, 5Spd), I crank the car and put into reverse. When I started letting out on the clutch the shifter knob moved horizontaly to the left. So now my reverse is where 1st gear normally is. When I put the car in first, the shifter moves back to the right a little. Im pissing the in dark, but maybe a loose motor mount or transmission mount bolt? HELP!!

Sounds like you need someone w/a mirror to watch the transmission while you move to confirm, is it making any un-natured noises, need more info so I can look up some stuff.

Yeah, you'll have to get under there and take a look but a busted trans or motor mount is your likely culprit - just have to figure out which.

The trans & motor are going to want to twist in the opposite direction the driveshaft is turning which is why the shifter moves one way in reverse and the other in forward gears.

As far as any noises or anything, it hasnt made any of of the ordinary and no grinding or such. The shifter just moved. Thanks for the replys, i was figuring on it being a mount, just needed some reinforcement before I get under there. Hopefully this afternoon i will have time to get underneath it and check it out. Ill def update you guys on whats going on.

Use a prybar to diagnose this not engine torque especially if anyone is under the car.
