On our way back from a fun filled day of shopping and trying to hide from the heat i stopped at a Chevy dealer to check out the new camero. they had a silver v6 with no sticker in the window but the salesman told me it was 29 with 3500 mark up. I thought that was alot till i went to the ford dealer. I saw a new ranger sitting in the front of the showroom so i walked up to check it out. Plain Jane ranger, 2.3, five speed, crank windows 18k+. wow. i paid 10,5 for a xlt five speed in 97. They also had a '10 Shelby gt 500 in the showroom, 50k but that was no shock. I just couldn't get over 18 for a no frills ranger. And ford wonders why the sales were down on them. Maybe ill just stick with looking at used cars.

Haha they had a Saleen truck at the dealership in my town for 62k.. 450 horse though..

I think the pricing is way out of hand. I can remember standing in the lot of a pontiac dealer in Denver one day starring at a maroon 2002 Pontiac Firebird Formula, 6-speed with the LS1, which I think put it around 300hp and it cost $24,000. So its just seems crazy to me that in only 7 years the cost has gone up 5 grand and hell the camaro has gained at least 400 pounds of weight over the 02.

I remember in 1986 a new GT Mustang was only $11,600.

yeh i think that my 88 vert was like 15 new, i wish i bought it new but thats what Ive seen as far as old window stickers.
Don't get me wrong, i understand that prices go up on everything over time. When your having trouble selling something i would think that the price would something that you might look at as the problem. I know that they probably had rebates and what not on it, but none were advertised at the dealer and i really don't watch much TV to see the commercials.
as a side note, i was at the Chevy dealer for about 5 min. before the salesman greeted me. Didn't really pressure me on any particular car, i told him what i was looking for and that i really wasn't in a hurry to buy. he told me they had some on the back side (where they hide the beater trade ins), we shook hands and i left. I never talked to a salesman at the ford dealer and i pulled up in my wifes 01gt and was looking at new mustangs and Shelby's in addition to the ranger. I saw salesmen riding around in their golf carts and on the phone but the only person i talked to was the receptionist and she was reluctant to say hi.

No, the pricing is where it's supposed to be now. Giving cars away was how they got into trouble. You can't have it both ways. You can have cheap cars and defaulting car companies that need G-ment bailouts or you can have properly priced cars and solvent car companies. You can't have cheap cars and solvent companies.

Not everybody has the right or the means to own brand new high performance or any car for that matter. You want the nice stuff? You'd better work for it now.

Not just that.. Let's take a 2010 Toyota Corolla Sedan base.
MSRP $16900
Invoice $15850
Let's say they agree to $100 over invoice
Sale price $15950
Let's say you're a college grad
$1000 college grad rebate
$500 cusomer cash
Bringing your sale price down to
$14450
Now, let's say you will qualify for this new $4500 gas guzzler rebate coming up.
Bringing you down to $9950
Now, it's fair to say that a new car takes a 20% hit leaving the lot.
Bringing you down to $7960 value on the vehicle.
Now let's assume you personally didn't qualify for the $1000 college grad or the $4500 gas guzzler rebate.
Your car that you paid $15450 plus tax and tags is worth $7960 with no miles on it and in brand new shape. Just wait till you try to trade it in.. Regardless of what Kelly Blue Book and Edmunds say(seeing as how they don't actually buy cars), the dealer will only give you about the same as HE can buy the same car for, and when there is a ton of rebates on a car, enough will run through Manheim at the rebated price that he will be able to find enough to stock his lot. If you try to sell it on your own, you might get another $1000, but you'll still be buried.

guy i work with said that he saw a new base model ranger at the local dealer for 18,5. power nothing and a five speed. I didnt realize that they were going for that much now. cant a full sized truck be bought for about the same?

Yup, the dealer here had a v-6 2wd f150 for over 19,5. So yea, buying that ranger would be pointless.

I too had bought a 97 XLT Ranger with 5-speed, 2.3 and no AC for $11,200 new.
I was watching the price is right and they were giving away a new base (XL I think) 4-banger 5-speed Ranger with AC and I was thinking "Thats about 14K" and then it shows $19,874 and I about choked!

There's still the Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon, which replaced the S-10/S-15 trucks. They're not bad, but I'd rather have a V6 Ranger, myself, than one of those funky 5-cylinder GM models.

Dunno about other companies, though - the Dakota was never quite in the same league by the mid-90's redesign, as it had inflated almost to a full-sized truck size/weight/engine class by then. I think Toyota still sells a compact pickup; those have always had a pretty good reputation, but they're kinda weak and puny as far as hauling things is concerned, compared to others.

ya Toyota has the 2 wheel drive trucks still, and I think Nissan has the Frontier.. Not sure if Mazda still makes there little trucks, but thats pretty much a Ranger with Mazda badges anyway.. Then the Canyon and Colorado like mentioned above

used cars till i die.
im sorry even with my basic(compared to others here) mechanic ability and knowledge of cars, i owuld never buy a new car. buying something a few years older or needs some work saves so much money.... new cars are rip...

most of us here no what to look for in car to make sure the engine ownt blow up after a 5mile drive home........plus places like carmax are pretty cool to save on some moeny and still get a nice decently used car....
