anyone know where i can find a turbo for my 89 lx which has a 302? any ideas on the cost to have it installed?

I've seen some pretty impressive numbers come out of a stock engine with a turbo.

depends on how much boost and how hard you run it.

I've heard good things about Hellion, but am running an HP stage one. Its on a stock motor with 9lbs. No problems (after unscrewing the mess from the shop who installed it) with the exception of the clutch and T-5. I paid a bit more, but it was absolutely complete, beautifully coated and well built. Nate, one of the guys from HP, helped me quite a bit even when I believed some of my problems were due to the kit (later found it to be the shops screw ups). Great kit, good service, long shipping time. Not selling for them, but definitely satisfied.

With a safe tune I am putting somwhere around 420/510 to the wheels. Its more than my street tires will ever handle and enough to make large tranny pieces small.

LONG time.

Actually I feel it's better to buy a turbo kit than it is to mod a 302 because of how crappy the block is. Buy a used turbo kit and go have fun! Horsepower is horsepower, if the tune is right a stock 302 will last for as long as you want it to.

1. Buy Turbo Kit
2. Buy head studs and new headgaskets
3. Install above parts
4. ???
5. Take it dyno to get a custom tune
6. Enjoy!

Turbomustangs.com has as much proof of a stock block lasting a long time as it has cracked blocks, in there knowledge base you can find the stock blok chronicles which will show you some carnage of stock blocks.

Stock blocks can last, but a tune is essential, I think Mustang5L5 is trying to get at is it just wont be as reliable as a stock mustang, or a simle HCI, which I think is true. But this depends on many factors such as what size turbo and how much HP you plan on making.

I agree that 500+ horsepower on a stock 302, no matter how you get to that power level, is not "safe." There are as many unzipped blocks as there are freaks making 600+ horsepower for entire race seasons. A safe tune is essential, but, at the end of the day, luck plays just as big a role. I personally go out and slam gears with my T5 and never have a problem. Some guys have T5s made of glass that implode at stock power levels. I'm putting a turbo on my motor in the next few months, and I'll cross my fingers and hope it holds together for a while on a conservative tune with reasonable boost levels.

Yea I agree, when I was planning on doing my turbo I figured I would run it till it blew, I think if you go into it with the mind set of "I am ready to run this thing till it blows than get a new block" you are a little better off than "If my stock block blows I am screwed". Not that it will crack for sure but there is always that chance of bad luck as you put it.

I have to agree with MOB. My motor is a grenade waiting to happen. I accept that. It could last another 50,000 if I am easy on it. It could blow tomorrow. I will just have to build my new motor. Now, I know that some of those chunks are probably going to take the turbo with them. Great..time to upgrade both. I have a coservative tune and it should run forever, but I cant expect it to last forever. I did read how the torsional loads are a bit diffrent with a NA motor than a turbo, therefore the turbo motor making a certain HP may last longer than an NA motor. Sorry dont have the specifics. On the high point, i can purchase a stock 5.0 or exploder motor for $500 bucks, so its all good for me. Be willing to take the chance.
