My neighbor has a 79 mustang cobra 5.0L carburated with a rebulit motor and is thinking about turbocharging it with an intercooler. What kind of turbo would you recommend? How hard do you think it would be to do?

whats so funny about that putting a turbo on a carbed 5.0? because last time i checked you CAN put a turbo on a carbed car...look on turbomustangs.com and you'll see that it is possible and has been done many times...

Yes you can turbocharge a carburated engine. I believe the original SVO mustang 2.3 liter turbo was a carb, 1980/81 transam 4.9 turbo was a carb.

To ike34
I know of no prefab kits to buy. I would try to use that box that goes around the carb i think it's a vortech piece. This allows the whole carb to be pressurized in a blow through configuration. Rather than putting the carb in front of the turbo in a draw through style which makes for serious turbo lag. As for which turbo to use that depends on how much power you want to make. This will not be a simple project good luck with it.

For a single turbo atleast a t4, bigger is okay. For a pair of turbo's t3's will do.

Heres more info on his car if this helps. He has an rpm air gap intake, 650/750 double pumper machanical secondary, .448 intake/.472 exhaust cam in it but also has a .520 intake/.544 exhaust, has flat top piston with 76 ford heads that are ported and polished, mid lenth headers, and is going to be getting and h pipe.
